BMW has issued Service Information Bulletin (SIB) 28 02 24 to address a potential issue with the double clutch transmission (DCT) and transfer box connection in certain 2022-2024 BMW X1 and X2 models. This service action aims to prevent premature wear in a critical drivetrain component, ensuring the longevity and performance of your vehicle. Owners of affected vehicles, including the U11 (X1 Sports Activity Vehicle) and U10 (X2 Sports Activity Coupe), should be aware of this important update.

Important Warnings for Owners and Dealers

BMW emphasizes several key points regarding this service action:

  • "Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery." This means new vehicles in dealer inventory must be repaired before sale.
  • "In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop if the campaigns have a status of remedy available. Otherwise, please release the vehicle." If you already own an affected vehicle, the repair will be performed during your next service visit if the campaign is active.
  • "Vehicles which require this campaign to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary, or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry." Owners can ask their dealer to check the status using these systems.
  • "Please make sure you check your dealer inventory as soon as possible." Dealers are instructed to identify and address affected vehicles promptly.
  • "The vehicle arrives at your center and this Service Action shows open (No other Main work will be performed or claimed during this workshop visit)." If your vehicle is brought in for this specific service action, no other main repairs should be performed or claimed under this visit.

Symptoms and Cause of BMW X1 Transmission Wear

The core problem identified in SIB 28 02 24 is wear on the longitudinal splined connection between the double clutch transmission (DCT) and the transfer box. This wear is caused by "micro-movements combined with frictional corrosion." Over time, these small movements and the resulting corrosion can degrade the connection, potentially leading to issues with power transfer or drivetrain durability. While the bulletin does not specify direct owner-perceptible symptoms, addressing this proactively prevents future problems related to the BMW X1 transmission wear.

Diagnosis and Trigger Conditions

The condition is not triggered by a specific fault code or warning light but rather by the inherent design and operational stresses on the splined connection. The micro-movements and frictional corrosion are an internal process that can lead to wear over time. The service action is a preventative measure to reinforce this connection before significant wear occurs.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair outlined in BMW SIB 28 02 24 focuses on adding spacers to the connection between the DCT and the transfer box to reduce micro-movements. The procedure, detailed in Repair instruction 31 60 004, involves several steps:

  1. Right Output Shaft Removal: The technician will begin by removing the right output shaft. This involves detaching the stabilizer link and specific bolts.
  2. Transfer Case Access: Bolts securing the transfer case will be removed to create space for the repair.
  3. Spacer Installation: Washers (spacers) are then installed between the link and the transfer case. This step may require slightly pushing the transfer case to the side to properly position the washers.
  4. Reinstallation: The removed bolts (including specific hex bolts) are replaced, and the stabilizer link is reinstalled. New bolts for the stabilizer link (items 2 and 3 in the diagram) must be replaced and tightened to 100 Nm with an additional 90° torque angle. The right axle is then reinstalled.

This process ensures the connection is reinforced, mitigating the conditions that cause BMW X1 transmission wear.

Required Tools or Parts

To perform this service action, specific parts are required to reinforce the double clutch transmission and transfer box connection. Technicians will use the vehicle's VIN/chassis number in the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETK) or AIR system to determine the exact part numbers needed for the specific vehicle configuration.

The following parts are listed in the bulletin:

Part Number Description Quantity
07 14 9 894 132 Multi-purpose bolt ASA 1
07 11 9 909 844 Hex Bolt (M12x1.5x90) 1
07 11 9 909 527 Hex Bolt (M10x60) 2
27 10 9 807 707 Retaining ring 1
37 14 6 869 771 Thread-tapping hexagon bolt 1
31 20 6 866 022 Shouldered bolt with compression spring 1
22 11 8 876 816 Adapter washer kit 1
31 10 6 876 027 ASA bolt 1

Additionally, other standard materials like fluids, lubricants, one-time use screws, nuts, and seals, as specified in ISTA repair instructions, will be used.

Claim Information for Dealers

For reimbursement, dealers must use Repair Code 0028240100. The flat rate labor operation codes for this service action are:

  • 00 75 871: Reworking the interface between the double clutch transmission and the transfer box (Plusposition work).
  • 00 75 284: Reworking the interface between the double clutch transmission and the transfer box (Main work).

Only one of these labor operation codes can be claimed per workshop visit. Reimbursement for bulk supply materials is available under Sublet Code 4, up to $25.00. For Alternative Mobility Solution (AMS) expense reimbursement for vehicle owners, Sublet Code 2 should be used. Further information on AMS can be found in SI B01 29 16.
