The built-in GPS navigation system on my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 is experiencing a severe location drift defect, causing the vehicle's onboard map to show the car miles away from its actual physical location. This is an active safety hazard. In the event of a severe accident, the vehicle's automated emergency services (eCall/SOS/Car-Net) rely on this built-in GPS module to transmit coordinates to first responders. Because the system is reporting completely inaccurate location data, emergency personnel would be dispatched to the wrong coordinates during an accident, causing catastrophic delays in life-saving medical response.

I was stopped in a friend’s driveway in front of her closed garage door to drop her off after an outing. The front sensor had not been alerting me to how close I was to any objects several times the same day. Before my passenger exited, the car suddenly lurched forward and smashed into my friend’s garage door, buckling several panels on the garage door and scraping the paint off the front of my car. I have contacted the dealership to have the car inspected and I’m waiting for an appointment. No police report has been filed. No injuries occurred. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms (aside from the front sensor not alerting me when I was close to objects in front of me) prior to this incident.

Vehicle: 2023 Volkswagen ID.4, VIN [XXX] (in service [XXX]) Component: Power Train – Drive axle / Driveshaft At 19,623 miles, a thumping and rolling noise developed in the rear, worst under heavy acceleration and deceleration. Volkswagen of Cool Springs (Franklin, TN) found the left rear CV axle loose where it fits into the rear drive motor. The dealer replaced the left rear drive axle (RO [XXX], 06/28/2025 to 07/14/2025). The same noise returned within 3 days. On 07/17/2025 (RO [XXX], 19,732 miles), the dealer ordered a second driveshaft. A later visit (RO [XXX]) again recommended axle replacement. Further axle and seal work was done on RO [XXX] (10/30/2025 to 11/05/2025, 22,199 miles). The problem has come back again. The vehicle has been at the dealer since about [XXX], now more than 50 days, with no fix or timeline. That makes at least four repair visits for the same defect, with the first two inside the first year of ownership. A recurring loose connection between the axle and the drive motor could cause sudden loss of drive power or axle failure at speed. I am asking NHTSA to investigate rear axle and drive motor defects in the 2023 ID.4. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- #11771885October 18, 2026STRUCTURE:BODY, WHEELS, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
Failure to stop, auto continued forward. I veered right to avoid heading collision with a tree. I veered right but was unable to prevent colliding with the tree, scraping the bark. The vehicle then spontaneously accelerated and I had to slam my foot on the brake to make it stop. This caused $8900 of damage to the body of the vehicle. The repairman at the collision shop expressed concerns with the brakes, and recommended the car be taken to the dealer to have the brakes checked..This EV has been reported as having this issue since 2021, for models 2021-2024; VW fails to install a safety recall. this problem. The car is a safety risk. I can’t drive it anymore because I fear a repeat of the incident. I injured my right shoulder with the sudden stop of the vehicle after the spontaneous acceleration. This vehicle poses a safety risk and I have to get rid of it, I can’t drive it for fear of a repeat of the malfunction.

On XXX, at about 10:22 PM, I was driving my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 southbound on [XXX] in [XXX], from [XXX] toward [XXX]. It was raining moderately, but the road and lanes were clearly visible. There was no vehicle, person or object in front of me. Adaptive Cruise Control was not engaged. I was traveling at about 55 mph. Without any input from me, the car suddenly applied full emergency braking. I did not press the brake pedal. The sudden braking on the wet road caused the car to spin around about twice. It struck the curb and the concrete barrier wall on the left side of the highway and came to a stop. The side airbags deployed and the seat belts tightened. The hazard lights came on by themselves. I believe the automatic emergency braking system falsely detected an obstacle, possibly due to the rain, and braked when there was no hazard. NC State Highway Patrol responded (report 261010168HA). The vehicle was towed and is being held so its event data can be preserved. [Injuries: none] I am reporting this because unexpected automatic braking at highway speed in rain caused a loss of control and could injure other drivers. While driving the car, the electrical system failed and the car shut down with very little warning. It is then inoperable. Fortunately, this has happened while on residential streets, but it would have been catastrophic on the highway. This has happened a few times. We have taken it to the dealership for repairs, but the problem persists despite their assurances that it was fixed.

This 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 has suffered 8 major electrical, battery, and drive-system failures since May 2026, leaving me repeatedly stranded across various locations—ranging from Fort Lauderdale and multiple spots around Boca Raton, to West Palm Beach during our latest breakdowns. Most recently, the vehicle broke down less than 24 hours after being released from Gunther Volkswagen service, and it is currently sitting at the service center yet again for this ongoing, unresolved failure. Because of this chronic and unpredictable unreliability, I am now terrified to drive far from home. Furthermore, as a licensed real estate agent, these sudden and repeated breakdowns have caused severe business disruptions, missed client appointments, lost sales, and severe damage to my professional reputation. To compound matters, the vehicle is subject to an open federal safety recall (Recall Number 93EX) with 'remedy not yet available.' The manufacturer is knowingly forcing us to operate an unsafe, chronically defective vehicle with an unresolved safety recall, putting our lives at extreme risk and causing continuous severe distress. We demand an immediate buyback and a full refund of all lease payments and out-of-pocket expenses. By the way I uploaded our service reports but after this reports we have to tows the car 2 more time. Car still at the service

The front windshield wiper system intermittently malfunctions on both the driver and passenger sides. During operation, either wiper blade can fold or roll over on itself instead of remaining properly positioned against the windshield. The vehicle and wiper system are currently available for inspection upon request. This creates a safety concern because the malfunction can reduce the effectiveness of the windshield wipers during rain and impair forward visibility. I initially believed the problem was caused by the wiper blades. I replaced the existing blades with new Bosch OE-style replacement blades, including a Bosch 28AOE on the driver side. The new blades generally operated normally, but the folding/rollover behavior still occurred. Because the same type of malfunction has occurred on both sides and with different blades, I suspect the underlying problem may involve wiper-arm alignment, arm tension, or the wiper mechanism, but the cause is UNKNOWN. The problem has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a Volkswagen dealer or independent service center. The vehicle and wiper system have not yet been inspected by Volkswagen, police, insurance representatives, or another third party. There were no warning lamps, dashboard messages, or other electronic warnings before the malfunction. The first symptom was the physical folding or rolling of a front wiper blade during normal wiper operation.

Recall 93EA / NHTSA campaign 26V030000 (high-voltage battery). I am the owner of a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 subject to safety recall 93EA (high-voltage battery). I live on the [XXX], and bought the car on this island from Pre-Owned Motor Cars. There is no authorized Volkswagen recall-service facility on the island; VW directs me to a dealer on [XXX], requiring inter-island ocean shipment of the vehicle. Since XXX, I have pursued the no-charge recall remedy through VW Customer Care, and since XXX I have an official case.number On XXX VW verbally refused any loaner vehicle and refused to escalate my call to a supervisor. On XXX, VW confirmed its position in writing : reimbursement of only 25% of round-trip transportation costs, capped at $1,000, with no loaner or alternate transportation offered. Inter-island shipment costs several hundred dollars each way, so I would pay roughly three-quarters of the shipping out of pocket (after fronting the full cost for later reimbursement) and be without my only vehicle for the duration, with no transportation provided. I live outside town with no practical public transportation. Additionally, VW's written response is addressed to a completely different person's name and gender, although the case number and VIN are mine, indicating my case file has been commingled with another customer's. I am reporting that the manufacturer has not made the 93EA safety remedy reasonably accessible without significant out-of-pocket cost, and I ask NHTSA to review whether the recall remedy is being provided as required. I can provide the VW case number, the name of the different person they addressed, etc. upon request. Not doing it here as I understand no personal information should be provided in this form. Shortly after purchasing my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4, the vehicle developed a failure involving the telematics/Car-Net system. The vehicle could not connect properly to Volkswagen ID/Car-Net services, the built-in GPS location was significantly inaccurate, and the SOS/emergency-call function was unavailable/deactivated. Volkswagen diagnosed the telematics/Car-Net control module as failed and replaced the module. After replacement, the SOS/emergency-call system, GPS, and connected services returned to normal operation. I am filing this complaint because the failed module affected the vehicle’s emergency-call capability, not just convenience features. If the SOS system is unavailable during or after a crash, the vehicle may be unable to place or support an emergency call as intended. I am concerned this may represent a broader defect affecting other ID.4 vehicles with the same telematics hardware.

I have experienced this situation two times this past week in a parking lot. I pulled out of a space and was only going 2 to 3 miles an hour and the car lunged forward quickly and then stopped. Luckily nothing was in front of me.

While driving on the highway, the entire infotainment started continuously rebooting over and over. I lost the ability to see my speed and which gear I was in among other things. They said that it is not part of the existing recall.

This is a follow-up to my previous complaint #XXX regarding my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 (VIN [XXX]). The defect remains unresolved. My vehicle received Recall 93EA (high-voltage battery) on XXX, during which only 3 of 12 battery modules (Modules 1, 5, and 12) were replaced. On XXX, a different module (Module 3) in the same battery pack failed with the same type of fault (P0BBD00 - Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage Variation Exceeded Limit). This was independently confirmed by a second authorized Volkswagen dealership (Norm Reeves Volkswagen Irvine) on XXX. Volkswagen has denied that this failure is related to Recall 93EA, but has not provided any technical explanation for that conclusion despite multiple written requests. Volkswagen Customer CARE has stated they only rely on dealership findings and do not independently investigate root causes. The dealership, in turn, has said it does not know the underlying cause of the recall and directed me back to Volkswagen. Neither party has explained the actual root cause of the defect that led to Recall 93EA or why a second module failed the same way just months after the recall repair. The vehicle has been effectively undriveable since XXX due to this unresolved safety defect. I have consulted multiple attorneys, all of whom declined to take legal action primarily because the vehicle's mileage places it outside standard state Lemon Law protections — despite the fact that this concerns an open, unresolved federal safety recall with no mileage limitation under 49 U.S.C. § 30120. I am submitting this follow-up to ensure NHTSA has current, updated information on this ongoing and unresolved defect. My car spontaneously accelerated out of control, onto my neighbor's lawn. I had to brake hard to stop the car from crashing into their house. This could have injured myself and my neighbors, if the car did not stop. The car has not yet been inspected by Volkswagen, I am in contact with their customer service about this issue. There were no warnings or issues with the car before this occurred.

The J949 Telematics/OCU Gateway Module on my 2023 VW ID.4 (VIN: [XXX]) has suffered a critical software lockup, causing a perpetual boot and local user login loop. This defect has completely frozen and locked out the User Privacy and Communication Settings menus. Because the telematics gateway is frozen and failing to authenticate, the vehicle’s cellular-connected SOS Emergency Call system and automated crash-notification telemetry are compromised and unreliable. The manufacturer (Volkswagen) has acknowledged the menu is missing under TAC Case #XXX but refuses to authorize a physical component power-cycle or warranty replacement, claiming a vehicle failing to load its safety and telemetry configurations is 'operating as designed.' Note: the Service Manager escalated to the TAC but they did not help and indicate 'operating as designed'. I called VW Customer Care and asked it to be escalated to a Regional Case Manager but they won't escalate given TAC says its operating as designed. Customer Care did issue a ticket, ref# XXX to have a supervisor call me back within 24 hrs...but I have not received any calls from a supervisor. I escalated by email to Executive Care and have not received a response. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- #11757162August 15, 2026SERVICE BRAKES
I have experienced braking issues with my 2023 ID.4. It would randomly require me to put press the brake pedal all the way to the floor and would still roll past stop lines, and near miss with cars in front of me. It happens more often when the road is wet and raining weather. I was told by two VW service centers that my breaks were normal and they found nothing wrong with the car as they couldn't replicate the issue. After doing some digging online I found out other ID.4 owners had to go to multiple service centers working with offsite EV team to have a proper diagnosis for the problem. They found that the ABS module was offline so the Brake Booster was not functioning. The scary part is that there was NO lights or errors indicating this. The biggest issue at the VW service centers are lack of EV knowledges, tools for proper diagnosis, and overwhelm by too many complaints from owners. My lease was ended and I returned the vehicle to VW informing them of faulty part/breaking issues with no warnings. The scary part is that there could be many people driving these cars that can have this happen randomly without ANY warning. I was lucky that I did not cause harm or liable for any loss during my 3 years of ownership. I am sure the issue is known from corporate level and just got ignored.

I received a factory recall notice from Volkswagen regarding the high-voltage battery in my ID.4 (Recall 93EA). I brought the vehicle to Volkswagen South Coast ([XXX]) for the recall repair on XXX completed XXX where the dealer found the battery testing "not OK" and replaced Modules 1, 5, and 12. On XXX — less than three months later — a battery warning light returned. The dealer found fault code P0BBD00 and identified Module 3, a different module not replaced during the recall, as internally defective, and quoted $5,301.68 to replace it. I contacted Volkswagen Customer CARE requesting confirmation of whether this is related to the recall and a technical basis for their determination. Volkswagen responded stating the dealership found the two issues unrelated, but provided no technical explanation for that conclusion. I believe the original recall defect was not fully remedied.
