Why This Program Matters
Many 2022-2024 Toyota and Lexus vehicles were delivered with only one Smart Key and a single mechanical key. This was a direct result of a global semiconductor shortage that affected microchip availability since October 2022. The mechanical key provided can only open and close doors and cannot be used to start the engine, limiting vehicle functionality for owners.
What Toyota Is Doing
Toyota has initiated the Second Key Delivery Program 23TJ01 to address this issue. Under this program, any authorized Toyota dealer will provide owners with one additional Smart Key, FREE OF CHARGE. Toyota has secured sufficient parts to begin a phased implementation of this remedy, ensuring affected customers receive their second Smart Key.
Approximately 747,600 vehicles are covered by this program across the U.S. This includes a wide range of Toyota and Lexus models from 2022-2024.
How to Check Eligibility
To determine if your vehicle is eligible for the Toyota Second Smart Key Delivery Program, you can use a TIS/SLP VIN lookup. Vehicles involved in the program will appear in the system if they are part of a phase for which the remedy is currently available. Toyota plans to notify affected customers by first-class mail when their second key is ready for delivery.
Notifications will occur in phases, with the mailing approximately one week after each phase's announcement. It's important to note that this second key delivery is not considered part of Toyota's New Vehicle Limited Warranty; it is simply the provision of the second Smart Key that was intended to be included with the vehicle purchase.
What Owners Need to Do
When your notification arrives, you will need to schedule an appointment with an authorized Toyota dealer. For the appointment, you must bring your vehicle and the original Smart Key. The original key will be used by the dealer to program the new Toyota Second Smart Key.
The key pairing process is estimated to take about 45 minutes. However, depending on the dealer's work schedule, you may need to make your vehicle available for a longer period.
Important Considerations
Toyota uses different types of Smart Keys, specifically Type #2 (15CY) and Type #3/#4 (19CY), which have different designs and use distinct semiconductors. The timeline for receiving your second Smart Key may vary based on the type of Smart Key your vehicle uses due to differences in semiconductor supply. All models have returned to production with two Smart Keys as of July 2024.
