Why This Matters

Certain 2021 Nissan Sentra vehicles may experience a Nissan Sentra battery drain due to a software issue in the Alliance In-Vehicle Infotainment (AIVI) system. This defect allows the AIVI system to continue drawing electrical current even after the vehicle is shut off. If the vehicle is not restarted within 46 hours, the battery can completely discharge, resulting in a "no start condition."

Symptoms

Owners of affected vehicles may notice a discharged battery, particularly if the vehicle has been parked for an extended period (more than 46 hours). The primary symptom is the inability to start the vehicle due to a completely drained battery.

What's Being Addressed

Nissan's Voluntary Service Campaign PM991 aims to correct a program logic concern within the AIVI system software. This logic error causes the AIVI system to "wake up" after the ignition is turned off and certain operations occur (e.g., pressing the brake pedal, locking doors), preventing it from returning to "sleep" mode. This continuous power draw leads to the Nissan Sentra battery drain.

Manufacturer's Remedy

The corrective action for this issue is to reprogram the Audio Control Unit software. This update will ensure the AIVI system properly enters "sleep" mode when the vehicle is off, preventing the excessive battery drain. This service is performed free of charge for parts and labor.

• DSS-5000P Battery Diagnostic Tool
• USB drive J-52727-1 (containing the necessary update software)

• Affected vehicles are not subject to a stop sale order.
• Battery replacement will no longer be covered under this activity. The battery inspection and replacement operation has been removed from this campaign (NTB21-066). Op codes PM9914 and PM9913 no longer apply for this activity.
• The service should take less than one hour to complete, though dealer schedules may vary.
• If you experience a "no start condition," contact your local Nissan dealer for immediate service and instructions on how to transport your vehicle.

Nissan began sending notifications to owners of potentially affected vehicles via U.S. Mail in August 2021. To verify if your 2021 Nissan Sentra is included in this campaign, you can contact your local Nissan dealer with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Dealers can also check using Service Comm or DBS National Service History - Open Campaigns I.D. PM991.
