Nissan has released Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) NTB20-052B to provide supplementary information regarding the Nissan Rear Door Alert system. This bulletin is crucial for understanding the functionality and proper operation of this safety feature in affected vehicles.

The Nissan Rear Door Alert system is designed to remind drivers to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle. It aims to prevent situations where a child, pet, or important item might be accidentally left behind.

Understanding the Rear Door Alert System

The Rear Door Alert system does not directly sense or detect objects or passengers in the rear seat. Instead, it operates by detecting when a rear door is opened or closed. This action indicates that there may be something in the rear seat that the driver should be aware of.

How to Manage the Rear Door Alert System

Drivers can customize the Nissan Rear Door Alert system settings through the vehicle's information display. This allows you to turn the system on or off and choose the type of alert received.

To access these settings:

1. Use the scroll wheel or arrow buttons on the steering wheel to navigate to "Settings" in the vehicle information display.
2. Highlight and select "Vehicle Settings".
3. Highlight and select "Rear Door Alert".

To turn the system ON, you can choose between two options:

• "Horn & Alert": The vehicle's horn will sound, and an alert message will display in the vehicle information display.
• "Alert Only": Only an alert message will display in the vehicle information display.

To turn the system OFF (disabling both the alert and sound), simply highlight and select "OFF".

Vehicle Information Display Messages

When the Nissan Rear Door Alert system is activated, specific messages will appear on your vehicle's information display to prompt action. One common message is "Rear Door Alert is activated".

Drivers have options to interact with these messages:

• "Dismiss Message": This option clears the current alert or message from the display.
• "Disable Alert": Selecting this will disable the Rear Door Alert for the current trip.

If no selection is made, the alert or message will disappear from the display after a short period.

When exiting the vehicle with the Rear Door Alert active, and a rear door is not opened within a short time after arriving at a destination, the message "Check Rear Seat for All Articles" will be displayed. The horn will also sound if the "Horn & Alert" option is selected.

Rear Door Alert Operation Conditions

For the Nissan Rear Door Alert system to function, it must be turned ON in "Vehicle Settings". The system activates under specific conditions:

• The system activates if a rear door is opened and then the vehicle is driven within approximately 10 minutes.
• Once activated, the horn will sound (if selected) and the vehicle information display alert/message will display on every subsequent trip. This continues unless the system is deactivated by one of two methods:
  • The driver opens a rear door shortly after arriving at a destination.
  • "Disable Alert" is selected in the vehicle information display.

The system will not activate if a rear door is used but the vehicle is not driven within approximately 10 minutes.

Important Owner Information

Nissan advises that the Body Control Module (BCM) should not be replaced for a Nissan Rear Door Alert system concern unless all information in this bulletin has been thoroughly reviewed and the issue has been verified as abnormal. This helps ensure that technicians correctly diagnose the problem before undertaking potentially unnecessary repairs.

This bulletin, NTB20-052B, supersedes previous versions NTB20-052 and NTB20-052a. It was last amended on January 26, 2022, with revisions to the applied vehicles and how to turn the system on and off.
