2021-2022 Nissan Rogue Automatic Back Door Inoperative TSB

Symptoms

Owners may experience an "AUTOMATIC BACK DOOR INOPERATIVE" condition. This means the automatic back door will not open, close, or latch properly. This issue directly affects the functionality of the power liftgate system.

Initial Check: Power Back Door Setting

Before any extensive diagnostics, Nissan advises confirming the "Power Back Door" setting is activated. This setting can be found in the Vehicle Settings menu within the Vehicle Information Display.

To access and change the "Power Back Door" setting, use the scroll dial and buttons on the steering wheel. Navigate to the Vehicle Settings menu and ensure the "Power Back Door" option is set to "ON."

Fault Codes / DTCs

An important warning from Nissan relates to a specific Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Attempting to recalibrate the Automatic Back Door Control Unit while troubleshooting other components of the Power Back Door (PBD) system can lead to issues.

This incorrect recalibration procedure can cause the recalibration to fail, erroneously generating DTC B2428-54 PBD CONTROLLER CALIBRATION LOST. This DTC can then lead to unnecessary replacement of the Automatic Back Door Control Unit.

Important Warnings

Nissan explicitly states that the Automatic Back Door Control Unit only requires recalibration if specific work has been performed. This includes removing and installing, or replacing, the Automatic Back Door Control Unit itself, the Automatic Back Door Assembly, or the Automatic Back Door Spindle Unit.

Do not attempt to recalibrate the Automatic Back Door Control Unit if you are troubleshooting other components like the hatch latch, electrical wiring harnesses, control buttons, or touch sensors. Doing so can trigger DTC B2428-54 and result in unnecessary part replacement.

Diagnosis and Repair Guidance

If the "Power Back Door" setting is confirmed to be "ON" and the Nissan Rogue automatic back door remains inoperative, further diagnostic information should be sought from ASIST and the Electronic Service Manual (ESM). Technicians should follow the Work Procedure outlined in C-III for recalibration only when the conditions specified above are met.
