Kia has identified that certain 2024 models may have been equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve assembly that does not meet the manufacturer's specifications. This defect can lead to the illumination of the "Check Engine light" (CEL) while driving. More critically, it can cause the vehicle to emit air pollutants exceeding Federal and California environmental standards, posing a risk to public health and welfare.

Symptoms

Owners of affected vehicles may notice the "Check Engine light (CEL)" illuminating on their dashboard while driving. This warning light indicates a potential issue with the vehicle's emissions system.

The Problem

At the core of the issue is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve assembly. This component, crucial for controlling vehicle emissions, may have been produced outside of Kia's stringent manufacturing specifications. An improperly functioning EGR valve can disrupt the engine's combustion process, leading to increased pollutant output and triggering the "Check Engine light".

Manufacturer's Remedy

To resolve this issue, authorized Kia dealers will replace the faulty EGR valve assembly with a new, compliant one. This repair will be performed completely free of charge to the customer.

Important Warnings for Owners

Owner notification letters detailing this campaign were scheduled to be mailed on September 30, 2024. Owners in certain states, including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, have specific requirements. If you reside in one of these states, you may need a completed Emissions Recall Proof of Correction Card and a Campaign Completion Label affixed to your vehicle for registration renewal purposes. The dealer will provide these documents upon completion of the repair.

Information for Dealers

Kia has instructed dealers to perform this campaign on any affected vehicles currently in their inventory prior to selling them to a retail customer. This ensures that all new vehicles delivered meet emissions standards and are free of the EGR valve issue. Dealers are also provided with information on how to access a list of affected vehicles and order necessary Proof of Correction Cards and Campaign Completion Labels, particularly for California and S177 State use.
