Hyundai has released Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 25-01-087H, also known as Service Campaign 9C2, to address a condition in certain vehicles equipped with Theta II engines. This campaign focuses on an Engine Control Module (ECM) software update designed to improve emissions performance.

This bulletin specifically applies to 2019-2020 Santa Fe (TMA), 2019 Sonata (LFA), and 2019-2021 Tucson (TL) vehicles that are equipped with the 2.4L GDI Theta II engine. The primary goal of this update is to correct elevated engine-out emissions.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair involves updating the Engine Control Module (ECM) software and applying an emissions label. The process is initiated using the GDS (Global Diagnostic System) in Auto Mode. If the update fails in Auto Mode, technicians can switch to Manual Mode using specific passwords provided in the bulletin.

After a successful update, the ignition must be cycled OFF for at least 10 seconds (or up to 30 seconds for some models) to reset the control unit. Technicians are also instructed to perform an All Systems Fault Code search and erase any incidental DTC history that occurred during the update. In cases of update failure, the power connector from the indoor fuse box or the negative (-) 12V battery terminal must be disconnected for at least 5 seconds before retrying.

An Emissions Label (part number NP001-SC9C2) is then filled out with the dealer code and date, and applied to the underside of the hood. For vehicles registered in specific states (CA, CO, CT, DE, ME, MD, MA, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA), a Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction Card (part number NP050-09006) must also be completed and provided to the owner. This card serves as evidence of the campaign completion for registration renewal in those states.

These codes ensure the correct software version is installed for the specific vehicle configuration.

Owner Action

If you own a 2019-2021 Hyundai Tucson, 2019-2020 Santa Fe, or 2019 Sonata equipped with a 2.4L GDI Theta II engine, your vehicle may be subject to this Service Campaign 9C2. Hyundai is performing this service free of charge. Dealers are required to perform this update on all affected vehicles prior to retail delivery and whenever an affected vehicle is in for any maintenance or repair.
