This bulletin, SIB 64 10 23 Revision #1, supersedes the previous SI B64 10 23 dated November 2023. It outlines the necessary steps to restore the functionality of the ambient air system through software updates.

Symptoms

Owners of affected vehicles, specifically the 2023-2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e PHEV (G05 LCI) equipped with the 4NM Ambient Air Package, may experience the following:

• The air freshener does not dispense fragrance.
• The ionizer does not activate.
• Both features can be selected and appear active in the central information display, but they remain inoperative in practice.

This condition is officially described as "AMBIENT AIR PACKAGE INOPERATIVE."

Cause

BMW has identified the root cause as a software issue. For vehicles produced up to December 31, 2023, the software included prevented the ambient air package from functioning correctly. For vehicles produced from January 1, 2024, to March 2024, the ambient air package feature was not being offered in production.

Important Warnings

BMW explicitly states that a parts replacement will not resolve the BMW X5 ambient air package inoperative issue. Therefore, replacing components of the ambient air system is not permitted as a remedy.

Repair Procedure Summary

The solution for the BMW X5 ambient air package inoperative condition involves updating the vehicle's software. Remote Software Updates (RSU) have been released to address this issue. These updates include specific I-Levels that restore the ambient air system's operation.

Key software versions involved are:

• I-Level 23-11-542 (released January 2024)
• I-Level 24-03-540 (released April 2024)

The software modification also comes with I Level 23-11-542. Vehicles can be updated using ISTAP 4.45.2x to I level 23-11-542 or a higher version. This update can be performed in conjunction with another repair if needed.
