Why This Matters: Safety Risk

What's Being Addressed

BMW has identified that the Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in affected vehicles may not have been manufactured according to their specifications. This manufacturing deviation can lead to an internal coolant leak, which in turn causes the CCU to fail. This Service Information Bulletin (SIB 61 13 24), Revision 1, replaces the previous SI B61 13 24 dated March 21, 2024, with clarified model information and added details on cause, correction, procedure, parts, and claims.

Symptoms

Owners of affected 2022-2023 BMW iX vehicles may experience one or more of the following symptoms due to a faulty BMW iX Combined Charging Unit:

• "HV charging interruption"
• "No high-voltage readiness when starting up"
• "The high-voltage system switching off while driving, causing the vehicle to coast slowly to a stop"

Important Warnings for Owners and Dealers

BMW has issued several critical warnings regarding this Delivery Stop:

• Do not deliver to a customer a New, Certified Pre-Owned or Used vehicle subject to a Delivery Stop, until the vehicle is repaired.
• Do not use or sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Delivery Stop.
• Only properly trained personnel, who have passed all applicable High-Voltage (HV) Technical Training Courses, should perform repairs that involve disconnecting or removing High Voltage battery components on any Hybrid or Electric Vehicle. Performing such work by unqualified persons may result in severe injury or damage to the vehicle. Additional safety information is found in Repair Instruction 61 00... “Observe safety instructions when handling electric vehicles”.
• Prior to disconnecting or removing any HV component, the HV system must be disabled and secured using the HV Disconnect Switch by a properly trained technician with a minimum HV Qualification level (Technical Training Course ST1824 – Alternative Drive Part 1). Once the HV system is disabled (indicated by the “Blitz” lightning bolt icon in the instrument cluster), a technician without HV Certification may remove certain HV components, but not the High Voltage Battery.
• High Voltage Battery removal and rework can only be performed by a HV Specialist Technician (certified by Technical Training Course ST1825 – Alternative Drive Part 2) with a HV Battery Certification level specific to the electric or hybrid vehicle. Performing this SIB requires GEN5 battery Certification from Technical Training Course "ST2205 Generation 5 High-voltage" class.

Manufacturer's Remedy

The manufacturer's remedy for this issue involves replacing the faulty BMW iX Combined Charging Unit. This repair is to be performed by authorized BMW service centers. The procedure is detailed in repair instructions REP 61 42 501.

Repair Procedure Summary

Technicians will replace the Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the affected vehicles. This process involves disconnecting the high-voltage system and carefully removing the old CCU. The new CCU will then be installed, and the vehicle's control units will be programmed and encoded to ensure proper function. This may also include performing a vehicle test.

• HT-12 Antifreeze RTU (Bulk 1/10 Liter) (Pre-mix): Part Number 83 19 5 A32 851 (Sublet as needed)

Additional fluids, lubricants, one-time use screws, nuts, and seals may also be required, as specified in ISTA repair instructions or the Electronic Parts Catalog.

Claim Information for Dealers

For reimbursement, dealers should use Repair Code 0061470800. Specific labor operations are provided depending on whether the vehicle is being delivered for the first time or is already in the workshop, and if other campaigns are being performed concurrently. Relevant labor operations include 00 75 983, 00 75 984, 00 75 379, and 00 75 380. Dealers should also refer to SI B01 01 20, B01 07 20, and SI B01 29 16 for additional guidance on claiming procedures and alternative mobility solutions.
