2024 BMW i4 Coolant Leak at Changeover Valve TSB

Symptoms

Owners of affected 2024 BMW i4, iX, and i7 vehicles may experience a 2024 BMW i4 coolant leak from under the car. Other noticeable symptoms include low heater output. The vehicle's Check Control system might also display the message: "Drive, you can continue driving" (ID49).

To diagnose the 2024 BMW i4 coolant leak, technicians will inspect all coolant changeover valves for active leaks or residual dried coolant. If no leaks are found on the valves, further diagnosis using the ISTA system and cooling system test equipment is recommended.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair involves replacing the faulty coolant changeover valve(s). This is considered a mobile-friendly repair. The number of changeover valves can vary by model: G26 (i4) typically has one, G60 (i5) has three, G70 (i7) has one, and i20 (iX) has two. Technicians must check the production date of the changeover valves; improved valves were produced on or after January 5, 2024 (5.1.2024).

After replacing the valve(s), the cooling system must be bled according to ISTA instructions, specifically under "Vehicle management/Service functions/Electric drive/Cooling/Fill and bleed the cooling system." A functional check of the electric auxiliary heater is also required, found under "Body/Heating and air conditioning functions/Electric auxiliary heater/Heating and air conditioning functions: electric auxiliary heater."

Specific repair instructions for each model are:

• G26 (i4) and G70 (i7): Refer to Repair Instruction 64 12 790.
• G60 (i5): Refer to Repair Instructions 64 12 790, 64 12 792, and 17 61 625.
