Revision History

This Technical Service Bulletin, 66 23 02 2065220/3, has undergone several revisions. It supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 66 number 22-85, dated March 10, 2022, due to the reasons listed in the document. The initial publication (Revision 1) was on December 8, 2021. Revision 2, issued on March 10, 2022, revised the header to specifically include the A7, S7, and RS7 models and updated the warranty section with Service Repair Times (SRTs) for these models. Revision 3 further corrected the Warranty SRT information.

Symptoms of an Audi Rear Spoiler Malfunction

Owners of affected Audi models may experience that the rear spoiler is inoperative, either automatically or manually. This can manifest as a warning message, "Rear spoiler: Malfunction! See owner's manual," displayed in the driver's information system (DIS) on the instrument cluster. The bulletin includes Figure 1, which visually depicts this message on the instrument cluster. In some cases, the rear spoiler system might appear fully operative despite the underlying issue.

Fault Codes / DTCs

When the Audi rear spoiler malfunction occurs, the aerodynamic control module, J223 (address word 006B), may store one or both of these Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

Technical Background

Audi has determined that the Audi rear spoiler malfunction is often caused by insufficient pressure from the carbon brushes to the motor commutator within the spoiler drive motor. This can lead to a loss of electrical contact, resulting in intermittent or permanent failure of the spoiler's operation. Figure 2 in the bulletin illustrates a cutaway view of the motor brush to commutator area, highlighting the point of contact where the issue arises.

Production Solution

To address this issue, Audi has redesigned the rear spoiler drive motor for new vehicle production. The updated design features an increase in brush-to-commutator pressure, which helps prevent the contact loss that caused the original problem.

Repair Procedure Summary

For vehicles exhibiting the symptoms described in TSB 66 23 02 2065220/3, the recommended repair involves replacing the rear spoiler drive unit. This unit is depicted in Figure 3 of the bulletin, showing the complete rear spoiler drive assembly. The repair process includes:

1. Replacing the Rear Spoiler Drive Unit: If the vehicle displays the symptom profile, the existing rear spoiler drive unit must be replaced with the updated part.
2. ODIS Test Plan and DTC Clearance: After replacement, technicians must complete the ODIS test plan to verify proper function and clear any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the aerodynamic control module (J223). This ensures the new unit is functioning correctly and all fault codes related to the Audi rear spoiler malfunction are resolved.

To process a warranty claim, use Service Number 6672 and Damage Code 0040. The labor operations for this repair vary slightly by model:

• For A7, S7, and RS7 models:
  • Tailgate trim panel remove and reinstall: Labor code 7092 1900.
  • Spoiler drive remove and reinstall: Labor code 6658 1951.
• For e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT models:
  • Tailgate trim panel remove and reinstall: Labor code 7092 1900.
  • Spoiler drive remove and reinstall: Labor code 6672 1950.

All labor operations refer to the Service Repair Time (SRT) with associated operations. Diagnostic time for 'GFF' is 0150 0000, corresponding to the time stated on the diagnostic protocol (maximum 50 Time Units). A road test prior to the service procedure is allocated 0121 0002 (10 Time Units), and a road test after the service procedure is 0121 0004 (10 Time Units). All warranty claims must adhere to the Audi Warranty Policies and Procedures Manual, with the claim comment "As per TSB 2065220/3".
