Understanding the 2021 Audi Q5 Pre-Delivery Inspection

Before any new 2021 Audi Q5, Q5 PHEV, or SQ5 reaches its owner, it undergoes a meticulous Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI). This essential process, outlined in Audi's internal communications, ensures every vehicle meets the manufacturer's stringent quality and safety standards. The 2021 Audi Q5 Pre-Delivery Inspection covers everything from basic functionality checks to advanced driver assistance systems and critical safety features.

The PDI process is designed to identify and rectify any issues that may have occurred during manufacturing or transport. It also ensures all vehicle systems are properly configured and operational for the customer. Technicians are instructed to use "Guided Fault Finding" and complete a "Total PDI Test" as part of this process.

Important Warnings for Dealers and Owners

Audi emphasizes several critical points during the PDI, particularly concerning safety systems and regulatory compliance:

  • Emergency Call Function: The manufacturer explicitly states, "The vehicle must not be delivered to the customer if the emergency call function has not been successfully activated (LED lights up in green)." This highlights the importance of ensuring the emergency call system is fully operational before delivery. It may take up to 20 minutes for the emergency call system to activate after flight/transport mode deactivation.
  • Audi Phone Box: For vehicles equipped with the Audi Phone Box, its operation is subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements. Owners "MUST REGISTER THIS DEVICE with your wireless provider and have your provider's consent" before use. Additionally, antennas "MUST be installed at least 20 cm (8 inches) from any person." A warning also notes that "E911 location information may not be provided or may be inaccurate for calls served by using this device." The integrated signal booster includes features like anti-oscillation, adaptive gain control, and uplink inactivity to prevent harmful interference to wireless networks, and these features cannot be deactivated by the operator.

Key Pre-Delivery Inspection Areas

The 2021 Audi Q5 Pre-Delivery Inspection is divided into several categories, each with specific checks to ensure optimal vehicle performance and customer satisfaction.

Vehicle Preparation

This initial phase involves checking for open campaigns and updates, verifying the presence of the Audi phone box customer registration form, and setting adaptation channels for features like CD Ripping. Technicians also perform diagnostics work and install the front license plate carrier if required. Reference is made to TSB 2051720 for specific instructions regarding the Audi phone box.

Exterior Inspection

Technicians inspect the vehicle's exterior for any damage, dings, dents, or scratches, which must be reported and repaired before delivery. They also check all key buttons, features, and door power closing functions. Preparation of base bars for customer delivery is also part of this section.

Lighting and Windshield

This section focuses on testing all exterior lighting functions and ensuring the windshield washers operate correctly and are aimed properly.

Trunk Inspection

Checks include verifying the power tailgate's operation and setting its default opening height. Technicians also ensure the wheel bolt cover removal tool is installed in the trunk tool kit, the tool kit is secure, and the inflatable spare tire and compressor are present with correct pressure. Battery clamps are checked for proper torque, and the luggage cover's operation is verified.

Interior Inspection

A comprehensive interior check covers the operation of all seat belts, latches, windows, locks, and seat controls. Mirrors, interior lights, and heated/ventilated seats are inspected, along with the manual folding 2nd row, climate control, and power outlets. The panoramic sunroof and sunshade operation are also verified, as is the glove compartment's functionality. The front Passenger Occupant Detection System is also checked.

Settings Configuration

Technicians configure various vehicle settings, including the MMI® touch pad, time source (set to "GPS" and "Automatic setting" with auto daylight savings), and language/measurement units. For the Q5 TFSI e, E-motor consumption units are changed to mi/kWh. Speech Dialog System operation is verified, and settings for "Entertain. Fad." in Parking aid and "Music volume while parking" are adjusted. Dealership location is set in navigation, and Manual Speed Warning is turned off.

Media / Radio / SAT

This section ensures all media and radio functions are operational. Checks include USB ports, AMI or aux. input, CD/DVD player, SD card slots, and programming local radio presets. HD Radio status is verified, and SiriusXM® is confirmed to be active and functional.

On-Hoist Inspection

With the vehicle on a hoist, technicians remove transport suspension blocks, inspect the steering, boots, brake system, hoses, tires, and wheels for damage. They also check for fluid leaks and loose components underneath the vehicle. Installation of wheel locks, wheel bolt covers, center caps, and proper wheel bolt torque are verified. Finally, tire pressures are set and stored for either sold or stock inventory vehicles.

Driving Performance

A road test is conducted to check horn operation, electronic parking brake, engine Start-Stop System, engine performance, and transmission operation (including shift paddles). Brakes are tested multiple times, and adaptive air suspension is checked in all positions. Steering/tire alignment is verified, and the vehicle is checked for squeaks, rattles, and wind noise, which must be repaired before delivery. The rear view mirror is calibrated, and radio reception for AM/FM/SiriusXM® bands is verified.

Driver Assistance Systems

Various driver assistance features are checked for proper operation, including cruise control/ACC with Stop & Go, Audi side assist (including Pre sense® rear), Audi active lane assist, parking system, rear cross traffic assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Head-up display, and High-beam assist. Navigation is activated, and directions are followed back to the dealership.

Post-Road Test Inspection

After the road test, technicians verify the SOS button is green and the Roadside assistance button LED remains off, indicating successful activation of the emergency call system. They interrogate the fault memory and upload the Diagnostic Log to the GFF Paperless Server. Engine oil and all fluid levels are checked and topped off. The yellow tire pressure tag is ensured to be on the steering wheel, and a 30 Day Inventory Maintenance Sticker is applied. A showroom charger is installed to keep the battery charged.

Audi connect® (USA ONLY)

For USA-only vehicles, technicians verify the Wi-Fi® hotspot is turned on and check its visibility. Satellite map view for navigation is enabled if equipped.
