Understanding the Audi Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI)

The Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) is a crucial process performed by certified Audi technicians before a new vehicle reaches its owner. This detailed checklist, outlined in manufacturer communication NHTSA ID 10177278, ensures that every aspect of the 2021 Audi Q5, Q5 PHEV, and SQ5 meets Audi's stringent quality and safety standards. The PDI covers a wide range of checks, from initial vehicle preparation to final system verification, guaranteeing a "Perfect Delivery" experience for the customer.

This document serves as a guide for technicians, emphasizing the use of specific tools and procedures like Guided Fault Finding and the Total PDI Test to identify and resolve any issues before delivery. The Audi Q5 PDI checklist is designed to prevent common problems and ensure all features function as intended from day one.

Key Reminders for Technicians

Audi provides several important reminders for technicians performing the PDI. All items must be completed by a certified Audi technician. It is recommended to use an Audi-approved battery charger to prevent excessive battery discharge during the inspection. Guided Fault Finding must be utilized, and the session completed and sent to the GFF Paperless server. The Total PDI Test must be completed prior to any other scan tool work. Technicians are instructed to start Guided Fault Finding with the engine running to identify control modules in transport mode. For specific items, technicians should refer to the PDI Technician Reference Document posted on ServiceNet.

Initial Vehicle Preparation and Checks

The PDI process begins with several preparatory steps. Technicians must check ELSA for any open campaigns and updates, and perform any necessary open campaigns. This includes verifying the Audi phone box customer registration form is present and adding the serial number from ELSA (if equipped), referencing TSB 2051720 for guidance. Other initial checks involve setting the adaptation channel for CD Ripping using Guided Functions (if equipped with NAV), performing diagnostics work, and installing the front license plate carrier if required.

Exterior and Interior Inspections

A thorough inspection of the vehicle's exterior and interior is a critical part of the Audi Q5 PDI checklist. Exterior checks include verifying all key buttons and features, ensuring proper power closing for all doors, and inspecting for any damage, dings, dents, or scratches, which must be reported and repaired before delivery. Technicians also prepare the base bars for customer delivery if requested.

Inside the vehicle, technicians verify the operation of all seat belts, latches, windows, locks, and seat controls. They inspect mirrors, interior lights, and check the functionality of heated steering wheels, heated seats, ventilated seats, and rear heated seats (if equipped). Proper operation of the manual folding 2nd row, climate control, power outlets, and panoramic sunroof are also confirmed.

Infotainment and Driver Assistance Systems

The PDI includes extensive checks of the infotainment and driver assistance systems. This involves verifying the operation of the MMI® touch pad. Technicians set the time source setting to "GPS" and auto daylight savings to "on," and ensure the time is set to "Automatic setting" and "Automatic time zone." Language and measurement units are also verified and set, with specific instructions for the Q5 TFSI e to change E-motor consumption to mi/kWh.

Technicians confirm the Speech Dialog System is operating. They set "Entertain. Fad." in Parking aid to an audible level, and "Music volume while parking" to "6 lines." Navigation settings, including dealership location, are verified, and the "Manual Speed Warning" is turned off. Media and radio checks include all USB ports, AMI or aux. input, CD/DVD player, SD card slots, and programming local radio presets. "HD Radio" is confirmed to be "off." Driver assistance systems such as cruise control with Stop & Go, Audi side assist, pre sense® rear, active lane assist, parking system, Traffic Sign Recognition, Head-up display, and High-beam assist are all verified for proper operation.

On-Hoist Inspection and Driving Performance

During the on-hoist inspection, technicians remove transport suspension blocks following ELSA instructions. They check the steering, boots, brake system, hoses, tires, and wheels for damage, and inspect the underside of the vehicle for fluid leaks and loose components. Wheel locks, wheel bolt covers, and center caps are installed, and wheel bolts are inspected for proper torque. Tire pressures are set for either sold or stock inventory vehicles.

The driving performance evaluation includes checking horn operation, verifying the electronic parking brake's hold and release, and testing the engine Start-Stop System. Technicians verify engine performance, acceleration, and transmission operation, including shift paddles. A test drive involves applying brakes several times, checking adaptive air suspension, steering/tire alignment, and listening for squeaks, rattles, or wind noise, which must be repaired before delivery. Radio reception in AM/FM/SiriusXM® bands is also verified.

Post-Road Test and Final Steps

After the road test, several critical checks are performed. Technicians must verify the SOS button is green and the Roadside assistance button LED remains off. It's noted that the emergency call system may take up to 20 minutes to activate after flight/transport mode deactivation.

Further steps include interrogating the fault memory and uploading the Diagnostic Log to the GFF Paperless Server. The service interval is checked and verified, engine oil level is confirmed, and all fluid levels are topped off if necessary. Finally, the yellow tire pressure tag is installed on the steering wheel.

Audi connect® Activation (USA ONLY)

For vehicles in the USA, the PDI includes specific steps for Audi connect® activation. This involves turning on the Wi-Fi® hotspot (if equipped) and checking its visibility. Technicians also enable satellite map view for navigation (if equipped), ensuring all connectivity features are ready for the customer.
