Instead, it incorporates a smoothening effect, meaning the display will not change faster than 4° F (2° C) per minute, whether the temperature is rising or falling.

Additionally, a programming strategy is in place to avoid incorrect readings when the vehicle is parked. Factors like radiant heat from the engine bay or elevated road surface temperatures can influence the sensor. To counteract this, the system follows specific logic:

• After the ignition is switched on, temperature changes are only displayed after 30 seconds if the vehicle is stationary (speed = zero) and the engine is off.
• When the vehicle drives faster than 12 mph (20 km/h), rising temperature values are displayed only during the first 3 miles (5 km).
• If the measured ambient temperature is above the displayed value but falling, the display will not change.
• When the coolant temperature reaches 104° F (40° C) and the speed drops below 12 mph (20 km/h), only falling ambient temperature values are shown. This can cause delays in stop-and-go traffic before the displayed temperature corrects.
