Symptoms

Owners of 2022-2023 Audi vehicles may notice the airbag warning light illuminated in the instrument cluster. This often occurs in conjunction with the ESC warning light also being active. The primary indicator of this issue is the presence of Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B13BCF2 stored in the airbag control module.

The 'Multiple collision brake' system is a safety feature controlled by the ABS control module (J104). This system is an integral part of the vehicle's Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) functionality. If the ABS control module detects an error related to the ABS/ESC system, the 'Multiple collision brake' feature is automatically deactivated.

When the 'Multiple collision brake' is deactivated, both the ESC and airbag warning lights will illuminate in the instrument cluster. At this point, DTC B13BCF2 is stored in the airbag control module (J234). It's important to understand that the illuminated airbag warning light is a symptom or indicator that the 'Multiple collision brake' has been deactivated, not the root cause of the deactivation itself. While other ABS/ESC DTCs may clear after 40 ignition cycles if the underlying error is passive/sporadic, the Audi airbag warning light B13BCF2 will remain on permanently until the DTC is manually cleared from the airbag control module.

Important Warnings

Audi explicitly states that replacing the airbag control module (J234) will not resolve this issue. Claims submitted for replaced airbag control modules will be subject to review by Audi Warranty. This TSB (69 22 81 2056406/3) supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 69 number 21-69 dated September 14, 2021.

Diagnosis and Repair Procedure

Addressing the Audi airbag warning light B13BCF2 requires a specific diagnostic and repair process:

1. Initial Scan: Connect the vehicle to ODIS Service and perform a Guided Fault Finding (GFF) scan. This will identify any other DTCs that might have caused the deactivation of the ABS/ESC functionality.
2. Address Root Cause: If other ABS/ESC related DTCs are found, follow the GFF instructions to determine and eliminate their root cause. Once the underlying issue is resolved, proceed to delete DTC B13BCF2 from the airbag control module.
3. Clear B13BCF2: If no other DTCs were present that could explain the ABS/ESC deactivation, directly erase DTC B13BCF2 from the airbag control module.
4. Persistent B13BCF2: If DTC B13BCF2 cannot be cleared immediately, disconnect the scan tool from the DLC (Data Link Connector). Park the vehicle, switch the ignition off, and then lock the vehicle. After waiting 30 minutes, attempt to clear the DTC again.
5. Road Test: Once B13BCF2 has been successfully cleared, road test the vehicle to confirm that no faults return.
6. Release Vehicle: If no faults reappear during the road test, the vehicle can be released to the customer without additional repairs.
7. Recurrence: Should the customer experience this concern again, an immediate GFF scan should be performed to determine the new root cause.
