2024-2025 Audi Yellow Steering Warning Lamp TSB

Symptoms

Owners of 2024-2025 Audi A4, A4 allroad, S4, A5, S5, and RS 5 models may observe the Audi yellow steering warning lamp illuminating when the engine is first started. When this warning light is active, drivers may also experience reduced steering assistance. The issue typically resolves itself and the warning lamp disappears once the engine is restarted.

Fault Codes / DTCs

When diagnosing this issue, technicians may find the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) logged in the steering control unit (diagnostic address 0044):

• B200000 with symptom 4176
• B200FF4 with symptom 16712020
• B200000 with symptom 4432

In some cases, the TSB notes that no DTCs might be logged in the steering control unit (J500) if it has software version SW 0172 and part number 8W0909144N. Additionally, there may be isolated instances where no DTCs are present despite the Audi yellow steering warning lamp appearing.

Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions

The primary trigger for the Audi yellow steering warning lamp is the engine starting. The problem is characterized by the warning light appearing and a noticeable reduction in steering assistance, which then clears upon restarting the engine. The underlying cause has been identified as a software issue within the steering system.

Important Warnings

Audi has issued specific warnings for technicians performing this repair:

• "Please ensure that you do not confuse the SVM code with the login code when entering the code!"
• When performing the steering control unit reset, "Only perform option -2- if you are instructed to do so by a TSB or Technical Assistance Center (TAC)."

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair involves performing a software update on the steering control unit (J500) using the Software Version Management (SVM) system. The procedure varies slightly depending on whether the vehicle is equipped with a start/stop system.

For vehicles without a start/stop system:

1. Perform a software update of the steering system using SVM code 44A041 first, followed by 44B041.
2. After the update, a red steering warning lamp may illuminate. Switch the ignition off and on again, then erase all DTCs.

For vehicles with a start/stop system:

1. First, reset the steering control unit at diagnostic address 0044 (J500) to factory settings via Guided Functions. Select option "2" for the reset.
2. Access the basic settings for the test program using login code 1181 for the program "0044 - Reset all adaptation values / adapt end stops."
3. Manually click "Done/Continue" even if the tester doesn't automatically report the reset is complete. Verify that the coding in control unit J500 (address 0044) under Identification is set to "00000000000000."
4. If the coding is correct, proceed with the software update. If not, repeat the reset to factory settings.
5. Perform the software update of the steering system using SVM code 44A041 first, followed by 44B041.
6. Similar to vehicles without start/stop, a red steering warning lamp may appear after the update. Cycle the ignition and then erase all DTCs.

Required Tools or Parts

Technicians will need access to the Audi diagnostic system to perform the software update. The following SVM codes are required:

• 44A041
• 44B041

The login code 1181 is necessary for resetting adaptation values in the steering control unit. The old software part numbers are 8W0909144N (SW 0172) and 8W0909144P (SW 1181), which are updated to new software version SW 1181 with part number 8W0909144P.

Warranty Information

This Technical Service Bulletin is informational only if the vehicle is outside of warranty. For in-warranty repairs, the service number is 4835 and the damage code is 0040. Labor operations for the software update are 0151 0010 (referencing SRT for associated operations) and 0151 0060 (time stated on diagnostic protocol). Road tests before and after the procedure have no allowance. Warranty claims must adhere to the Audi Warranty Policies and Procedures Manual.

This TSB, identified as 48 24 76 2074847/3, supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 48 number 24-75 dated October 10, 2024, and also replaces Pending Service Solution (PSS) TSB 2073087.
