The 2021 Audi A5 Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) is a crucial process that all new 2021 Audi A5, S5, and RS 5 vehicles undergo before being delivered to customers. This detailed checklist, outlined in Audi Service document PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION (PDI) Version 1.3, ensures that each vehicle meets Audi's stringent quality and safety standards. The PDI covers a wide range of checks, from basic vehicle preparation to complex system configurations and driving performance tests.

Important Reminders for Technicians

The document emphasizes several key reminders for certified Audi technicians performing the PDI. All items must be completed prior to customer delivery. Audi recommends using an approved battery charger to prevent excessive battery discharge during inspection. "Guided Fault Finding" must be used, and the session completed and sent to "GFF Paperless".

The total PDI Test must be completed before any other work involving the scan tool. Technicians are instructed to start "Guided Fault Finding" with the engine running to identify control modules in transport mode. For items marked with an asterisk (*), technicians should refer to the PDI Technician Reference Document on ServiceNet.

Vehicle Preparation

Initial vehicle preparation steps ensure the car is ready for inspection and delivery. Technicians must check "ELSA" for any open campaigns and updates. They also verify the presence of the Audi phone box customer registration form and add the serial number, FCC ID, and model information, referencing TSB 2051720.

Any open campaigns or diagnostic work must be performed, and the front license plate carrier installed if necessary.

Exterior and Lighting Inspection

A thorough inspection of the vehicle's exterior and lighting systems is required. This includes checking all key buttons and features. Technicians inspect the exterior for any damage, dings, dents, or surface scratches, reporting and repairing any issues before delivery.

For lighting, exterior functions are tested, and windshield washer aim is corrected if needed.

Trunk and Interior Checks

The PDI also covers the trunk and interior components. In the trunk, technicians verify operational status and the emergency release handle. They must install the wheel bolt cover removal tool from the PDI kit into the trunk tool kit and ensure the tool kit is securely installed.

Spare tire pressure is set, and battery clamps are checked for proper torque. Inside the vehicle, all seat belts, windows, locks, and seat controls are verified. Mirrors, interior lights, heated and ventilated seats (if equipped), and climate control operation are inspected. Power outlets are checked, and the glove compartment, panoramic sunroof, and sunshade operation are verified. The front Passenger Occupant Detection System is also checked.

Settings Configuration

Several critical settings must be configured correctly. Technicians verify the operation of "MMI® touch". The time source setting is set to "GPS", and "Auto daylight savings time" is turned "on". Time is set to "Automatic setting" and "Automatic time zone".

Language and measurement units are verified and set, and the "Speech Dialog System" operation is confirmed. Specific audio settings include setting "Entertain. Fad." in "Parking aid to an audible level" and "Music volume while parking" to medium. Dealership location is set in navigation (if equipped), and "Manual Speed Warning (if equipped)" is turned "off".

On-Hoist and Driving Performance Inspection

These sections cover critical mechanical and dynamic checks. During the on-hoist inspection, transport suspension blocks are removed. Technicians check the steering, boots, brake system, hoses, tires, and wheels for damage, and inspect the underside for fluid leaks and loose components.

Wheel locks, bolt covers, and center caps are installed, and wheel bolts are torqued correctly. Tire pressures are set and stored. Driving performance checks include horn operation, electronic parking brake functionality, engine Start-Stop System, engine performance, and transmission operation (including shift paddles). A road test involves applying brakes several times, checking steering/tire alignment, and listening for squeaks, rattles, and wind noise. Radio reception for AM/FM/SiriusXM® bands is also verified.

Driver Assistance and Convertible Functionality

Various driver assistance systems are checked for proper operation. This includes cruise control/ACC with Stop & Go, Audi side assist, Audi active lane assist, parking system, rear cross traffic assist, and Head-up display functionality (all if equipped). Navigation is activated, and directions are followed back to the dealership. For convertibles, the power folding top operation is tested, and the presence of manual closing tools is verified.

Post-Road Test and Audi connect® Checks

After the road test, final checks are performed. Technicians verify the "SOS button" is green and the "Roadside assistance button" LED is off. The document explicitly states: "The vehicle must not be delivered to the customer if the emergency call function has not been successfully activated (LED lights up in green)". It notes that it may take up to 20 minutes for the emergency call system to activate after transport mode deactivation.

Fault memory is interrogated, and the Diagnostic Log is uploaded to the "GFF Paperless Server". The service interval is checked, engine oil level and all fluid levels are verified and topped off. The yellow tire pressure tag is ensured to be on the steering wheel. A "30 Day Inventory Maintenance Sticker" is applied, and a showroom charger is installed to maintain battery charge. For Audi connect® (USA ONLY) equipped vehicles, the Wi-Fi® hotspot is turned on, its visibility checked, and satellite map view enabled for navigation.

Audi Phone Box Requirements and Warnings

The document includes critical information regarding the Audi Phone Box in equipped vehicles, particularly concerning Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements.

This section also details that the signal booster fulfills FCC Network Protection Standard (NPS) requirements, incorporating features like anti-oscillation, adaptive gain control, and uplink inactivity to prevent harmful interference. These features are always enabled and cannot be deactivated by the operator.
