Toyota Mississippi Graduates First 4T Academy Class

Eleven high school seniors from New Albany and Union County High Schools recently became the first graduating class of the Toyota 4T Academy at Toyota Mississippi. This program marks a significant milestone for Toyota's initiative to prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing. The academy combines classroom learning with practical training directly at the Toyota Mississippi facility.

Inaugural Class Completes Program

The recent graduation of 11 seniors from New Albany and Union County High Schools signifies the successful completion of the first cohort of the Toyota 4T Academy Mississippi. This program is specifically designed to immerse students in the world of advanced manufacturing. Participants gain essential skills through a curriculum that includes classroom instruction, collaborative teamwork, and hands-on training at the Toyota Mississippi plant.

Troy Allen, Toyota Mississippi's general manager of manufacturing, emphasized the program's focus on developing crucial soft skills. He noted that students learn communication, problem-solving, and collaboration, which are vital for future career success. Instructors from both the school district and Toyota work together to guide students through academic and workplace challenges, boosting their confidence and capabilities.

Hands-on Training and Career Opportunities

During their senior year, students in the Toyota 4T Academy Mississippi program divide their time between traditional classroom studies and practical work experience. They actively participate in assembling Toyota Corollas on the production line at Toyota Mississippi. This hands-on experience allows them to earn $17 per hour while still completing their high school education.

The academy's training facilities are located within the New Albany School District’s Center for Innovation. This 3,000-square-foot classroom is equipped with various modern tools, including electric and pneumatic tool-training stations, a simulated vehicle production line, virtual reality simulators, and collaborative robots (cobots). These resources provide a realistic and immersive learning environment for aspiring manufacturing professionals.

Investment and Program Expansion

Toyota initially announced a $2 million investment in 2023 to bring the 4T Academy to Mississippi. This funding aimed to establish an innovative pathway for high school students, placing them on a direct route toward manufacturing careers. Three years after the initial investment, the first group of graduates is now poised to enter the workforce, with conditional full-time job offers from Toyota awaiting them.

The Toyota 4T Academy was originally established in 2020 in partnership with Purdue IN-MaC, and it has since expanded its reach. Beyond Mississippi, the program maintains community partnerships in Indiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Toyota Mississippi further supported the initiative by securing a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission’s ARISE program for the New Albany School District in 2023, bolstering the program's resources.

The graduation of the inaugural Toyota 4T Academy Mississippi class represents a successful model for industry-education collaboration. This initiative not only provides students with valuable skills and immediate career opportunities but also strengthens the future workforce for advanced manufacturing in the region and for Toyota.
