2027 Toyota GR86 Receives Performance and Interior Upgrades

Toyota has announced a series of focused enhancements for the 2027 GR86, aiming to deepen the connection between driver and car. These 2027 Toyota GR86 updates include refinements to throttle response and shift feel, new interior and exterior color options, and an expanded suite of safety technologies. The updated GR86 is anticipated to arrive at Toyota dealerships in summer 2026.

Performance and Driving Dynamics

For 2027, the GR86's engineers have refined the throttle calibration to provide a smoother, more linear response to accelerator input. The manual transmission also benefits from an improved fifth-to-fourth downshift feel, achieved by widening the chamfer of the shifter interlock by approximately 0.02 inches, contributing to a more seamless driving experience.

The 2027 GR86 continues to be powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, delivering 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, with peak torque arriving at 3,700 RPM. This enables a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 6.1 seconds for models equipped with the six-speed manual transmission and 6.6 seconds for those with the six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT-i). All GR86 models feature a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential for enhanced traction during cornering.

An optional Performance Package is available for both GR86 and GR86 Premium grades. This package includes Brembo® brakes with red-painted 4-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers, paired with 12.8 x 1.3-inch front rotors and 12.4 x 0.79-inch rear rotors. SACHS® dampers, filled with high-pressure nitrogen and oil, are also part of the package, designed to absorb vibrations and maximize ground contact for firm, stable steering while balancing ride comfort.

Design and Interior Refinements

A new exterior color, Thunder, joins the GR86 lineup for 2027. This solid gray color is designed to shift in appearance depending on lighting conditions, accentuating the vehicle's sculpted body lines. Inside, the GR86 introduces updated interior options that build on its driver-focused character.

Owners can now select an available Cockpit Red interior, which provides a bold contrast with black Ultrasuede® and red leather accents on the side bolsters, red floor mats, and red door accents. A black interior option is also available, featuring black Ultrasuede® and black leather-trimmed upholstery with black stitching. Premium models receive a cast iron black finish on various interior touchpoints, including switches, knobs, and the shifter, for a more cohesive aesthetic. The base grade comes equipped with six-way adjustable black GR-embossed fabric seats.

Enhanced Safety and Connectivity

For 2027, the GR86 enhances driver confidence with expanded active safety and convenience technologies. The recognition range of the stereo camera has been nearly doubled, improving the detection of preceding vehicles for adaptive cruise control. A monocular camera has also been added to assist in detecting nearby objects, particularly at intersections.

All GR86 models come standard with an Active Safety Suite, which includes Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning, and Automatic High Beams. The Premium grade adds Rear Sonar Warning. The standard Star Safety System™ incorporates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Smart Stop Technology® (SST), Track Mode, and Hill Start Assist Control (HAC). Additionally, all models include seven airbags and a Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS).

Owners of the 2027 Toyota GR86 updates also benefit from Connected Services trials, including a one-year trial of Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect. These services offer emergency assistance, maintenance updates, and remote vehicle interaction via the Toyota app.
