Concept Overview and Inspiration

The Nissan Z Kaze concept emerged from a collaborative effort by Nissan product planners and designers, aiming to celebrate the Z sports car's open-top legacy. The team envisioned an exhilarating driving experience, drawing inspiration from scenic routes like California's Pacific Coast Highway. This project pays homage to Nissan's iconic open-top sports cars and the influential '90s tuning culture that shaped the brand.

The concept vehicle is a demonstration of Nissan's engineering capabilities and its connection to its historical models. Ponz Pandikuthira, senior vice president and chief product and planning officer for Nissan Americas, noted the concept combines engineering excellence with a celebration of the brand's heritage. The Z Kaze is not intended for production or purchase, serving instead as a design study.

Nostalgia-Inspired Design Elements

The exterior of the Nissan Z Kaze concept features a Pacific Teal paint scheme, chosen to reflect the aesthetic of '90s sports cars. Designers implemented subtle modifications to the Nissan Z's lines, incorporating elements from the import-tuner scene of that era. These include a lightweight, vented carbon fiber hood, fender flares, and a custom carbon fiber aerodynamic body kit. These additions aim to provide a more aggressive, high-performance stance while maintaining the Z car's iconic styling.

The concept rides on authentic, restored 18-inch NISMO LMGT2 wheels, which are revered by enthusiasts for their strength and motorsports history. These forged, multi-piece wheels, sourced and meticulously rebuilt, measure 10 inches wide at the front and 11 inches wide at the rear, contributing to the vehicle's powerful appearance.

Inside, the Z Kaze concept deviates from typical dark concept car interiors with custom white leather-appointed seating, emphasizing the cabin and its open-air configuration. Carbon-fiber interior accent trim further enhances the high-performance look, while Bose Personal Plus headrest speakers are integrated into the seats to provide an immersive audio experience, even with the roof removed.

Enhanced Performance Components

Underpinning the Nissan Z Kaze concept's aesthetics are mechanical upgrades that also reference past sports car and tuner trends. The suspension system has been thoroughly enhanced with NISMO components, aiming to improve driving dynamics.

The vehicle's twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine receives performance boosts through select components from the tuning company GReddy. These include a SUPREME SP exhaust system, a front mount air-to-air intercooler kit, and an Airinx air filter kit. These additions are designed to elevate the engine's output and overall driving engagement, aligning with the concept's performance-inspired theme.

The Nissan Z Kaze concept will be publicly displayed at ZCON in Phoenix, Arizona, until September 26, and later at the Japanese Classic Car Show on October 31.
