The IONNA charging network, a joint venture founded by eight prominent automakers, has secured the top position in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Public Charging Study. This recognition comes as the IONNA charging network has expanded significantly, now operating over 180 live charging sites nationwide, effectively doubling its size since early 2026. The network emphasizes coverage, reliability, and amenities to enhance the electric vehicle charging experience.
Network Expansion and Growth
IONNA has established itself as the largest 400kW charging network in the United States. Its rapid expansion includes more than 180 operational sites across the country. This growth reflects a strategic effort to provide widespread access to high-speed charging infrastructure for electric vehicle owners.
A key part of this expansion is a partnership with Circle K, which has resulted in over 40 Rechargeries at Circle K locations becoming live since April of this year. These sites contribute to the network's goal of integrating charging options within existing retail environments, aiming to increase convenience for drivers.
Enhanced Access and Driver Benefits
IONNA has opted against developing a proprietary mobile application, instead focusing on seamless integrations with existing platforms. The network is now accessible through 19 partner applications, including Presto, EV Connect, and ChargeHub. This approach allows drivers to manage their charging sessions using familiar digital tools.
Furthermore, IONNA has enabled Plug & Charge capabilities for Volvo drivers, with support for Toyota and Lexus anticipated to launch in October. Drivers of BMW, General Motors (GM), Hyundai, and Mercedes-Benz vehicles are currently eligible for charging discounts through their respective manufacturer apps and Plug & Charge services. The remaining founding automakers are expected to offer similar benefits in the near future.
Customer Feedback and Driver Experience
To ensure that driver feedback directly influences its development, the IONNA charging network has established a dedicated Driver Advisory Council. This council, co-captained by Kyle Conner of Out of Spec and Tom Moloughney of State of Charge, provides structured input on network performance, customer priorities, and future product development.
The council's initial focus is on gathering feedback for IONNA's newly launched Driver's Dashboard. This feature provides real-time charging session details to drivers without requiring an additional app download or subscription, offering convenient access to information about their charging progress.
For Honda owners and other EV drivers, the expansion and top ranking of the IONNA charging network signify improved access to reliable and high-speed charging infrastructure. The network's focus on open access and direct driver feedback aims to simplify the public charging experience across North America.
