On October 12, 2026, BMW unveiled the Concept 7 Protection, a new armored vehicle designed to offer discreet security in the luxury sedan segment. This concept is based on the BMW 7 Series Sedan and targets private and corporate customers, as well as organizations facing everyday, situational, or unpredictable risks. The vehicle aims to provide protection without sacrificing the comfort, appearance, or driving characteristics of a standard 7 Series.

Discreet Integration and Market Positioning

The BMW Concept 7 Protection integrates its security features seamlessly, preserving the prestigious appearance and spacious interior of the luxury sedan. This approach ensures that the vehicle maintains the signature BMW driving dynamics, with chassis, brakes, drive, and driver assistance systems calibrated for the added protection elements. The concept is positioned to offer a lower scope of protection compared to higher-security vehicles in BMW's lineup, such as the BMW X5 Protection VR6 and the BMW 7 Series Protection, which offers VR9 protection with an optional VPAM 10 rating.

BMW's strategy addresses a growing demand for certified protection solutions across different risk profiles. The Concept 7 Protection focuses on discretion and everyday usability, making it suitable for scenarios that do not require the highest levels of ballistic or blast protection. This expands BMW's extensive offering of protection vehicles, complementing existing models with varying security levels.

Advanced Protection and Powertrain Details

The protection features of the BMW Concept 7 Protection include transparent and opaque sections of the passenger compartment. The bulletproof glass is significantly thicker than that of a comparable series vehicle. Doors incorporate precisely integrated protective elements made from ballistic steel and fiber-reinforced composites, which also cover overlaps between the doors, glazing, and bodywork. Additional armor protects the rear triangular windows, discreetly concealed from the interior.

For roof protection, an extra layer of steel and fiber-reinforced composites is placed beneath the standard panoramic glass sunroof, sealing the upper passenger compartment while maintaining the vehicle's exterior design. The sunblind for this sunroof remains permanently closed. The bulkhead and rear wall are also fully integrated into the ballistic protection concept. The BMW Concept 7 Protection complies with the new BayB standard, providing defense against common handgun ammunition like 9x19mm and .44 Magnum. The vehicle is based on the BMW M760e xDrive, a plug-in hybrid system featuring a 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line petrol engine combined with an electric motor. This powertrain delivers a combined output of 450 kW (612 hp) and a maximum torque of 800 Nm, channeled through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The combustion engine contributes 313 kW (426 hp), while the electric motor provides 145 kW (197 hp).

Interior Enhancements and Security Systems

The interior of the BMW Concept 7 Protection features a minimalist design with premium materials, including Smoke White BMW Individual Merino Leather, Alcantara interior trims, and a BMW M Anthracite Alcantara headlining. Sun protection glazing and electronically operated sunblinds enhance passenger privacy, while a digital interior mirror improves rear visibility. A notable new feature is the BMW Individual rear console, showcased for the first time in this concept, which includes a foldable table with a wireless charging tray and a cool box. This rear console is expected to be available for BMW 7 Series vehicles in the second half of 2027.

Additional security systems include an intercom that allows communication with people outside the vehicle while doors and windows remain closed, utilizing exterior and interior microphones and loudspeakers. An attack alarm system provides visual and audible alerts. While the front and rear side windows are electronically operable, they cannot be fully opened, a common feature in armored vehicles.

With over 45 years of experience in developing and producing certified protection vehicles, BMW continues to expand its portfolio to meet diverse user requirements. The BMW 7 Protection Concept provides insight into potential future offerings, with an initial focus on selected European markets.
