BMW Maps to Integrate Navigation and Driver Assistance

BMW will introduce a new feature for its BMW Maps system, integrating navigation and driver assistance information into a single 3D view. This update, rolling out in October 2026, will be available for BMW vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System X. The aim is to provide drivers with a more intuitive understanding of their vehicle's surroundings and active assistance systems, particularly in complex traffic situations.

Enhanced Driver Orientation

The updated BMW Maps system will combine route guidance, the vehicle's real-time surroundings, and driver assistance data into one unified 3D display on the central screen. This allows drivers to see not only their next navigation step but also how the vehicle perceives its environment and which assistance functions are actively supporting the driving task. The display will accurately show the driver's vehicle within its lane and at the correct road level, aiding navigation on highways, at intersections, and in city traffic.

This integration is designed to make assisted and semi-automated driving more comprehensible. For instance, the Highway Assistant 2, which permits hands-free driving on highways at speeds up to 130 km/h (approximately 80 mph), will benefit from this combined view. The system manages both longitudinal and lateral movement and supports automated lane changes upon driver confirmation. With active route guidance via BMW Maps, the system provides support from the highway on-ramp to the exit.

Expanding Semi-Automated Driving Capabilities

The intelligent interaction between navigation and driver assistance is considered a significant step toward highly automated driving. BMW Maps with this new driver assistance integration shows how route guidance, environmental perception, and assistance functions work together, offering better orientation when driver assistance is active. This technology was developed by the BMW Group in collaboration with Mapbox, which provides navigation data and map technology.

Looking ahead, BMW models with BMW Operating System X will begin rolling out navigation-guided, semi-automated driving in urban areas starting in 2027. This initiative will initially launch in Germany, further expanding the capabilities of the BMW Maps 3D view system. The integrated display is built upon the new generation of driver assistance systems working in conjunction with BMW Operating System X.

Availability and Future Outlook

The BMW Maps feature with driver assistance will be available in combination with either the Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant in select countries, cities, and on specific roads, with a phased rollout. The availability, functional scope, and system limitations of these assistance systems may vary by country.
