BMW's next-generation 3 Series (G50) models, equipped with four- and six-cylinder internal combustion engines, have completed their final phase of series production development. These vehicles recently underwent extensive driving dynamics testing at the BMW Group's proving grounds in Miramas, southern France. This testing focused on refining driving pleasure, transverse dynamics, and overall ride comfort for the upcoming sedan lineup, which will launch alongside the previously revealed fully electric BMW i3.

Next-Generation 3 Series Design and Technology

The new BMW 3 Series models incorporate the brand's Neue Klasse design language, featuring a distinct interpretation of the signature BMW four-eyed face. The exterior is characterized by a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and modern 2.5-box proportions, aiming to convey a sporty sedan aesthetic. Inside, the vehicles will feature the BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating system, powered by BMW Operating System X, designed to enhance driver interaction.

All internal combustion engine variants will include 48V mild hybrid technology, contributing to efficiency. The chassis has been refined with an almost perfectly balanced weight distribution, a longer wheelbase, and wider front and rear tracks compared to the previous generation. These adjustments are intended to improve dynamic performance and handling precision. The standard suspension utilizes newly developed lift-related dampers, with adaptive suspension and adaptive M suspension available as options. Customers will also have the option to specify sports tires in 245/35 R20 for the front and 275/30 R20 for the rear.

BMW M350 xDrive Performance and Features

The BMW M350 xDrive will serve as the performance flagship for the internal combustion engine 3 Series models. This M Performance variant is exclusively powered by a 3.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine, paired with 48V mild hybrid technology. The powertrain delivers a combined output of 326 kW (443 hp) and 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque. It comes standard with an eight-speed BMW Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive.

The M350 xDrive is projected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds. Standard equipment for this model includes adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, and variable sport steering. A notable new feature, the 'Drift Moment,' will be available on the M350 xDrive. This function, activated via the Central Display, directs full engine power to the rear wheels, enabling controlled drifts. The 'Drift Moment' is scheduled to become available during 2027 and will be activated in already delivered vehicles via a Remote Software Upgrade.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics and Efficiency

BMW has implemented an intelligent BMW Driving Stack, an integrated hardware/software system, across the new 3 Series lineup to manage driving-relevant functions. While the fully electric BMW i3 utilizes a "Heart of Joy" central computer, the internal combustion engine models feature an optimized BMW Driving Stack tailored to their specific powertrains. This system, along with a transverse dynamics management system, aims to ensure precise and agile driving characteristics.

Chassis technology has been upgraded with an integrated braking system and adjustments to the steering ratio for improved handling. The car features a double-joint spring strut front axle and a five-link rear axle, complemented by anti-roll bar mounts with high preload on both axles for better roll control. Furthermore, BMW EfficientDynamics measures are integrated, including the 48V vehicle electrical system, My Mode Efficient, active air-flap control, and an Efficiency Coach, all designed to maximize vehicle efficiency.

The 2026 BMW 3 Series with internal combustion engines, including the high-performance M350 xDrive, is set to offer a blend of updated design, advanced technology, and refined driving dynamics. With production for the M350 xDrive expected to begin in the second half of 2026, prospective buyers will soon have a new option that continues the brand's focus on driving performance and efficiency.
