The BMW Group Plant Dingolfing has commenced production of the new BMW 7 Series Sedan, integrating innovations from the upcoming Neue Klasse architecture into an established model line. This launch marks a significant step for BMW, with plans to roll out Neue Klasse technologies across 40 BMW Group models by the end of 2027. The BMW 7 Series production at Dingolfing highlights a blend of advanced manufacturing and meticulous craftsmanship.
New Technologies and Enhanced Luxury
The new BMW 7 Series Sedan represents the most comprehensive model update in the BMW Group's history. It combines progressive luxury features with technological advancements derived from the Neue Klasse. Key updates include a new design language for BMW's luxury class and a more centralized software and electronics architecture.
Interior innovations feature the new BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating concept, alongside the BMW Passenger Screen and an updated BMW Theatre Screen for rear-seat occupants. The vehicle also incorporates BMW Symbiotic Drive, designed to ensure seamless interaction between the driver and driver assistance systems.
Drive technology has also seen significant improvements. The fully-electric BMW i7 60 xDrive Sedan now utilizes new battery technology with sixth-generation round cells. This enhances both range and charging performance, allowing the i7 60 xDrive Sedan to achieve an electric range of 727 kilometers (WLTP) and charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 28 minutes.
Advanced Manufacturing and Customization
The BMW 7 Series production process at Dingolfing combines large-scale automated manufacturing with detailed craftsmanship. This approach supports extensive customization options, offering customers greater freedom of choice than previous models. Over 500 exterior paint colors and color combinations are available, along with approximately 700 equipment and material combinations for the interior.
An industry-first dual-finish paint application process is employed, which combines matte and high-gloss surfaces on a single vehicle body. This process required two and a half years of development and involves significant manual labor. Each vehicle undergoes more than 4,500 minutes of work, with around 2,000 minutes dedicated to manual tasks, ensuring precision and exclusivity.
For interior refinement, the Individual Manufaktur workshop at Dingolfing integrates skilled manual work with high-tech solutions. Artificial intelligence is used for optical inspection of leather and efficient cutting, while a 3D sewing robot assists skilled craftspeople in stitching the cockpit covering.
Flexible Production and Sustainability
Like its predecessor, the new BMW 7 Series is built in Assembly Hall 52 at Dingolfing, sharing the same production line as the BMW 5 Series and BMW iX models. This flexible setup allows all drivetrain variants—petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and fully-electric—to be assembled in a mixed flow on the same line. Individual production processes have been adapted to integrate the new features and technologies, including modifications for cockpit pre-assembly and the new electrical system architecture.
BMW Group has invested a two-digit million-euro amount in this model update at Dingolfing and the nearby Landshut component plant. Key components like axles and electric motors are produced at Dingolfing, while Landshut supplies essential parts such as cockpit elements, bumpers, and cast body structure components.
Quality validation for the new 7 Series involves both human expertise and machine intelligence. Every vehicle undergoes extensive automated and AI-monitored testing within the plant. Additionally, 100 percent of all BMW 7 Series vehicles complete an extra road test, where experts inspect and verify all systems under real-world conditions. The Dingolfing plant also emphasizes renewable energy, sourcing all purchased electricity from renewable sources and generating a portion on-site through an 11 MWp photovoltaic system. A new biomass heating plant provides up to 100,000 MWh of locally produced heat, covering about half of the facility's process heat requirements.
The start of BMW 7 Series production at Dingolfing underscores BMW's strategy to integrate advanced Neue Klasse technologies into its current luxury lineup. This move aims to deliver enhanced performance, greater customization, and sustainable manufacturing practices to consumers.
