I am reporting an unexpected automatic emergency-braking event involving my 2026 Volvo EX30. On XXX, I was driving uphill on [XXX] near [XXX]. The street was narrow because of parked cars on both sides, and a black SUV was approaching downhill in the opposite direction. I deliberately slowed down and was proceeding cautiously as the two vehicles passed each other. The EX30 suddenly applied the brakes very hard on its own and gave a loud collision/braking warning. The braking lasted only a moment, but the entire car jerked abruptly. There did not appear to be an imminent collision, and I was already slowing and driving cautiously. I am concerned that an unexpected hard-braking intervention like this could create a safety hazard, particularly at higher speeds or if another vehicle were following closely behind. On July 28, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., I was stopped in my 2025 Volvo EX30 at the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Mount Pleasant Avenue in Livingston, New Jersey. When the light turned green, I applied the accelerator normally. The vehicle unexpectedly surged/lurched forward and struck another vehicle. After the accident, the tow-truck operator reported that the Volvo lurched forward three or four additional times while he was attempting to load it onto the truck. He reported that this behavior did not occur while unloading it in reverse. Volvo subsequently inspected the vehicle and retrieved electronic data. Volvo states that the data showed full accelerator-pedal input and that the vehicle operated as designed, but it has not provided me with the underlying data, technical report, extraction records, or supporting documentation. I dispute that I intentionally applied full acceleration. Police body-camera footage may also show the vehicle lurching while it was being handled after the collision. I am reporting this because the repeated behavior raises a serious potential unintended-acceleration or accelerator-control safety issue.
The contact owns a 2026 Volvo EX30. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the adaptive cruise control independently activated, and the vehicle independently accelerated. The failure was a persistent failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the failure was not duplicated. The contact was informed that the failure was an operator error. The contact was informed that by accidentally pressing the shifter two times, the adaptive cruise control feature was activated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the shifter was not pressed during the failure. The dealer was made aware of the failure another time. The contact was advised to video the failure and provide the video to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.

I was checking EV charging locations on my Pixel 10a while the EX30 was driving in Pilot Assist mode. I was hand-free. The car was chirping at me to do something, I have XXX while cars zoomed past at 80 mph or more (just outside of [XXX]). Vehicles were depertely swerving, honking, I was yelling at the car to move... it remained tied to the ground. After what felt like an eternity (you'll need to check the car black box), I realized my phone needed to be placed back on the middle console to get a 'key read'. At least 20 cars swerved, slammed on their brakes, and came within inches of smashing the car (with my wife), we thought we were dead. I take full responsibility for unsafely using my phone and driving without two hands on the wheel. But this shouldn't cause the vehicle to come to a DEAD STOP, IN THE MIDDLE OF A FREEWAY! The car should use words, not beeps. It should gradually restrict driving features. It should NOT STOP ON A FREEWAY - HANDS ON WHEEL OR NOT, KEY CARD ON THE CONSOLE OR NOT. In this case, the "safety response" could have been the most deadly response. PLEASE have Volvo engineers evaluate this safety response - it almost killed that day, it will have a chance to kill again. This car is subject to NHTSA Recall Number 26V103, manufacturer's recall number R10362. I learned about the recall on February 23 via a Reuters article, but received nothing from Volvo. In follow-up with Volvo I was told on February 25 via email that there was no recall on my car. After some digging, I found through the NHTSA site that the recall did apply to my car. When Volvo corporate finally got their story right with prodding from my local dealer, I instructed to reduce charging to 70% and not to charge in or near my home or other flammable material, like trees. I have received a notice of recall a few weeks later from Volvo. After multiple escalations, and nearly 4 months without any timeframe for repair of my car, I have initiated a lemon law claim with Volvo. My complaint is that Volvo (1) sold me a car last July that is now limited to 70% of the range I expected, and presents a serious safety risk to my home and my family, (2) failed to communicate with me or my dealer about this serious risk for weeks, and (3) they have not repaired my car in a timely manner.
