The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH, and pressed the brakes when suddenly the second row passenger side captain seat erroneously moved forward. The [XXX] child seated in a high-back booster seat in the second row passenger seat was pushed forward into the rear of the front passenger seat. The child had become trapped between the two seats. While trapped between the seats, the child also experienced distress caused by the seatbelt. The contact was able to free the child from between the two seat,s and the seat was eventually correctly repositioned. The child was later treated for trauma to the chest and abdomen. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 50,000. during a low speed parking lot stop the 2nd row bench came unlatched, the seat bottom dropped and slid forward. my [XXX] son who was in his forward facing car seat slammed into the back of the driver seat. then the bench seat was jammed in this position, he was smashed and stuck between his car seat and the driver seat, the bench seat would not move, it was stuck and my child was trapped, screaming and bleeding from his face. i had to use the driver power seat functions to move it forward to get my child un trapped. once out we tended to his medical needs as he was bleeding from his face and screaming. the seat is still stuck in this forward/dropped position and will not move. the seat latch release handle has no resistance and will not do anything. his car seat was still smashed against the driver seat and i was unable to get it out from the side, i had to lift it out through the sunroof to get it out! we took him to local urgent care, he has a laceration on his eye, bruising, swelling and is very emotionally upset as are we. i do have a dash cam and have the footage of the seat slamming forward. Passenger side LED daytime running light is out at 67,000 and is going to cost over $2k to get replaced. LED lights should not be going out that quickly. I have also found LOTS of the same complaints online for the same year, make and model.

- #11684583September 2, 2025SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
The autonomous braking activates out of no where while driving. Violently hard and nothing around. A message appears on the dash board saying it can not sense hands on steering wheel. Also while backing up it will activate and no one is near the car or it even activates in an empty parking lot. The car jolted so hard when this happens and everyone went flying forward. No ..the dealer has had the car for 8 days and says they can not replicate the problem. He asked me for permission to drive it to Land O Lakes and I said no the car is very dangerous and that is a huge liability . I gave them permission to drive it around local only. No the vehicle has only been inspected by the dealer. He said since they can not replicate it he can not have a mechanic from Volkswagen assigned to it. No nothing appeared only after. Also, the brakes squeak and sound like it’s grinding on metal like a very old car. Also the front assist beeps loud when nothing is in front of the car. Also, when I go to start the car at times, it will not detect the key. I will bring the second key and it will not detect the second key also. Also the radio screen constantly disconnects everything and it will turn black and then display 0000 with a date of April 6 2025. Also while driving the app will say the door is open. The trunk is open the windows open when everything is closed. That also happens at 2 AM or 3 AM. It will say the trunk is open. The door is open and everything is closed.

Our LED headlight failed at 80,000 miles and is not just a simple bulb change. We have to replace the entire headlight and the cost is over $1000 for one.

I own a 2021 VW Atlas, subject to recall 24V464. I scheduled a recall service appointment weeks in advance at Colonial Volkswagen of Medford, MA (via the VW app for 8:30 AM on Aug 19, 2025). I received multiple confirmations by email and text from VW. When I arrived on time, the Service Advisor (Frank Dasilva) told me the parts were not available and the recall could not be performed. This was never communicated beforehand. I had rearranged my schedule for this appointment, including transporting my daughter to her internship in Boston, and this caused major disruption. When I expressed my frustration, the Service Advisor raised his voice, disclosed a personal health issue, and walked away. I was then told to wait for the Service Manager, who eventually arrived but gave dismissive and contradictory explanations. He claimed that no VW dealer orders recall parts before the customer arrives because they do not know the VIN or parts required. This is false—my VIN and recall number were known when the appointment was scheduled. The Service Manager’s tone suggested that performing the recall was a “favor” since I was not paying for it, which is unprofessional and misleading. Recall work is a federal safety requirement and VW dealers are compensated by the manufacturer. Colonial VW did not prepare for my scheduled appointment, wasted my time, treated me poorly, and failed to comply with the intent of the recall process. I was left without a solution, only told I’d be contacted “when parts arrive.” I am requesting NHTSA to review Colonial VW’s handling of recall 24V464, as this appears to be a failure to ensure timely and professional compliance with a federally mandated safety recall.

The car engine shuts off while driving at slow speeds ... many times while parked at a red light. The instrument cluster displays 'Please restart the engine'. The shutoff happens while the vehicle is in Drive mode. It is very dangerous and the VW dealership is not acknowledging the issue in spite of several online reports of it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/191339898236209/posts/1665305790839605/ https://www.vwatlasforum.com/threads/atlas-shutting-itself-off.3005/page-2

The car does not downshift into second gear from third, the downshift occurs when triggered by the first gear. This can result in starting acceleration initiating below 1000 rpm around 5 MPH in gear 3 to get back up to speed. This can be best observed during stop and go traffic where the car does not reach mark to trigger downshift to first gear. This creates unpredictability and potentially hazardous situations.

Vehicle often stalls at stops, been doing a lot of research and a lot of people have the same issue all over forums with the VW atlas across all years, its a safety issue that needs to be addressed. most of the forums and VW techs say its the vapor canister going bad but with a newer car we shouldn't have to get it replaced every 10k miles. you don't want your car stalling at a intersection with traffic with your kids and family in the car, its dangerous and VW needs to fix this issue

Daytime Running Lights went out after 50K miles (warranty is out at this point). To fix this issue VW is requiring to change the whole light fixture, which costs more the $1,000. This is an outrageous expense to fix a single LED strip to support DRLs, and forces drivers to go without lights to avoid paying for it. This issue is VERY common on this model, with multiple online sources/forums with the same experience.

- #11680427August 13, 2025SERVICE BRAKES, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
Within a year of owning my vehicle, I began to notice a SEVERE shudder on braking when descending from 7000 foot elevation (Mammoth Lakes, CA) to a 4400 foot elevation (Bishop, CA) on [XXX] of [XXX} upon braking. I have driven this route approximately 25 times in the past 1.5 years. Normally, I would set the adaptive cruise control to 73-75 mph on this downhill grade to control speed, and let the adaptive cruise control do the work of controlling speed, while keeping my own foot off the break. However, if I did need to slow further due to traffic, I would experience a SEVERE shudder upon manual braking- see attached screenshot of a video taken at night. I brought this incident up to VW (See mechanic video) in 1/2025, and they blamed the problem on overheating of the front rotor (see technician video link below). Upon return trips to Mammoth, I now realize that this overheating was caused by the adaptive cruise control itself attempting to control auto speed. Now, in order to make this LESS dangerous, I have to let the car get up to 80 mph and then pulse the breaks- because if I let the adaptive cruise control do the work as designed, it creates an unsafe driving condition BECAUSE OF A FAULTY DESIGN by VW- if heat is an issue, better dissipation is needed, or a temperature sensor is needed. VW's solution was for me to spend $700 to replace brakes and rotors due to a VW design flaw, despite my car being under warranty, and I cannot afford this currently. I think this issue MUST be recalled immediately before I (or someone else) who drives on long hilly grades has a fatal car accident due to a design flaw in the VW Atlas Adaptive Cruise Control. - #11679379August 8, 2025VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, SERVICE BRAKES
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while at a stoplight with vehicles in the front and rear, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, lunged forward, and crashed into a Chevrolet pickup truck. The brake pedal was applied but failed to respond. There were no warning lights illuminated. There were reported injuries, a police report, airbag deployment, or a fire. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, who was unable to service the vehicle due to parts. The vehicle was towed to an auto body shop. Then towed back to the same local dealer, where an unknown diagnosis and repair were completed. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The manufacturer reported that the vehicle was not the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000. The VIN was not available.

- #11679088August 7, 2025FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, UNKNOWN OR OTHER
My 2023 VW Atlas is stalling out in high temperatures. When you mash the accelerator, at times the vehicle will not go. From my online research, many others are experiencing this same issue and have found resolution involving charcoal canister + purge solenoid, fuel pressure sensor and software updates. The EVAP and fuel system could be tested manually. However, VW says because no codes show up, there is nothing wrong with the vehicle and will not provide any help whatsoever to me. This is going to get someone killed. I have taken to local dealer plus reached out to VW corporate with no help. My car is under warranty.

- #11678588August 5, 2025UNKNOWN OR OTHER
When driving my 2022 VW Atlas at low speeds (stopping at a red light, backing down my driveway, and slowing for yield zones), the vehicle either 1) shudders to a stop and presents "please start engine manually" message or 2) appears to turn off using the start/stop system, but then presents the "please start engine manually" message. Dealer replaced a fuel injector the first time, charged the battery a second time, and now a third time this is happening with no resolution, as "the technician was unable to replicate the issue." This is all within about a 12-month timeframe. This has put my children and me at risk driving on roads with 60 mph speed limits with stop lights, because if the light turns green and I'm trying to restart the vehicle, someone from behind could hit me. The dealer was able to replicate the issue the first visit it was brought in for.
