- #11583845April 18, 2024ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
My 2017 Honda CR-V decided to brake all by itself while driving on the highway going 65 mph. This incident first happened to me in May 2023 on a clear sunny day with my 1 month old baby and fiancé in the car. My fiancé thought I slammed on the brakes but in fact I did not, I was on the highway going 65mph. I was so scared because I didn’t even know my car was capable of braking on its own until that day. Everything in the vehicle flew to the front of the car, luckily no one was behind me or in front of me at that time and we were all okay but we were shaken up. The second time it happened, I was with my fiancé again on a backroad about a month later with no one in front of me or behind me, again on a clear day and my car slammed on the brakes by its own. From that second time on I always turn off my collision mitigation system hoping it makes a difference and does not do it again. I love my car but it is a complete hazard if it brakes on its own with no warning prior to it happening. I did call Honda to see if this was an issue or if there was a recall but the lady told me there is no recall at this time and this was the second time she has heard of this. I do not know what will cause the car to brake on its own, I can’t replicate it on demand, it is very random. I made sure my sensors were not obstructed and were clear. Hopefully Honda will do something about this issue, this is completely unacceptable.

Driving down the road and all the sudden the CR-V warned brakes and automatically stopped the car while I was driving. Nothing in the road at all. This has now happened numerous times brought to Honda and they said nothing is wrong cause it didn’t do it when they drove it. This also has happened going down the interstate going 70 mph but luckily no accident.

Interior lights switch does not seem to work properly. It started a couple of months ago. I have had issues with the automatic braking when the car "thinks" there is something in front of me and slams on the brakes. 4 out of 5 times there was nothing there. 1 of those times was during a rain storm, so that time I chalked it up to the radar being wet. I have also had several instances when the car flashes "BRAKE" when there is no reason for it. Similarly, when in reverse, the car again "thinks" there is something behind me and beeps when there is nothing within 50 feet of my car. I keep my cameras and radar clean at all times. Before each trip, I wipe them clean.

I began to experience "sticky steering" on my nearly new vehicle. The steering would temporarily "freeze" and would require some effort to turn. I took the vehicle to my dealer service department and they confirmed the problem. They ordered a replacement part in December, 2023. As of this date (18 April, 2024) the replacement part has not arrived, and the dealer says that it will likely not arrive until September or later. I have uploaded a copy of the dealier service invoice that confirms the diagnosis. I feel the vehicle is unsafe to drive, and I drive it as little as possible.

While driving straight at any speed (not just on the highway), if a slight steer angle is input (usually to the left) it takes more than the expected amount of effort to return to center. It feels like the steering is sticking in place. This already leads to slight overcorrections during normal lane keeping, and if the problem worsens I can see how it might lead to a wreck. This has been an ongoing issue since about 10,000 miles. 2021 CR-V Hybrid EX.

Hello I have been so upset with Honda. I’ve owned many Hondas and other cars in my past and never had any problems. I would tell anyone to buy a Honda until now. My daughter has been driving my car and she said it smelled bad and all the lights kept coming on. We took it to a mechanic and at that time they didn’t really see anything wrong with it. My daughter kept driving it and we found out about the recall and called to have that fixed and they said they don’t have the part and they don’t know when they will get it. Well that was upsetting because we felt that was an issue with the car and we didn’t understand why they couldn’t just order the part give us something else to drive until they got it in but no such luck. The last time I talked to Honda in Marion, Ohio they said I didn’t need the part but clearly that is wrong. Well the part I’m the most upset about is my daughter could have died driving down the road and all the lights came on in the vehicle and it would not drive while she’s out in the middle of nowhere scared half to death. We get the vehicle to Honda and they say it’s the fuel injectors. I’m like no one’s fuel injectors go out. Well I look it up and it’s a huge problem for Honda and they just don’t want to pay to have them replaced. It has cost me $2000 and had to get another car to drive and my Honda still isn’t driving very good and still no recall fixed. This is wrong! I am very disappointed in Honda and shocked. What can I do about this situation?

The infotainment screen starts glitching out on extended trips. It constantly beeps and flashes on the screen as of a button is being pressed. It also will not allow you to turn the system off to remove the distraction. This happened on a trip to Chattanooga in July 2022 and was 'fixed' with a software update. It happened again on [XXX]. Driving along highway at highway speeds, the automatic braking system indicated 'BRAKE' in the center dash when there was no object in front of me. The vehicle did _not_ auto brake, but that was obviously the next step/possible if it continued to malfunction (actually brake the vehicle).

Some time in 2021 is the estimated date of occurrence of the event I am describing next. I was cruising on a freeway [XXX] ), traveling at about 65 miles an hour. It was a clear day with light traffic, around noon. There was no car in front of mine. There were no cars adjacent to mine either. Then I saw with my eyes a partially deflated mylar balloon (silvery and shiny) floating across (left to right) my path of travel. I estimate that the vertical position of the balloon was less than the height of a typical bus or a semi-truck. Its float path was rather random - up and down. Its distance from my car was about 5 to 10 car length (very rough estimate) when I first noticed it. Since I easily recognized it as a light-weight balloon (typical party balloon), I determined that it would not do any harm to my car even if timing was such that my car came in contact with it. So, I did not take any evasive action - I did not apply brakes and I did not change to another lane. But this is when my CR-V's automatic braking system engaged with a sudden deceleration, "BRAKE" warning light on the dash along with a series of beeping. The whole event lasted a few seconds after which the car responded normally to my gas-pedal input. Luckily there was no car following me when this automatic braking occurred. This was a one-time occurrence to date. Since then I have not had similar unexpected automatic braking due stray objects. I did have had several occurrences of "BRAKE" warning light and beeping due to my car coming in close proximity to other cars in front of me. In these instances, I cannot say with certainty whether or not brakes themselves were automatically applied. In these instances, I applied brakes myself (albeit later than what the car's computer determined to be appropriate). In August of 2023 I was trying to accelerate after getting off a clover ramp and I was going about 10-15mph when my car suddenly felt like it slammed on the brakes and came to a stop. There were no warning lights on the dash and no vehicles or obstacles around for it to brake on its own. I had to reapply my foot to the gas again and again for my vehicle to move.

I was driving on the highway in Atlanta at approximately average highway speed. I hit the break to avoid a vehicle - I don’t thin the extent of breaking was unusual breaking, but perhaps a bit harder than usual - and then I removed my foot off the break. The problem arose when the break remained engaged after I removed my foot from the break. Cars around me swerved in all directions to avoid hitting me. Eventually, perhaps one to two seconds later, the break disengaged and I was able to control the vehicle. I was alarmed that the break remained engaged after I removed my foot from the break and felt I had no control of the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2020 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH the brakes independently activated. The contact stated that the vehicle slowed to approximately 15 MPH. The contact stated that the "brake" warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was no longer braking, and the contact continued driving to his destination. The contact stated that the failure occurred one more time. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 27,000.

I've owned this car for 4 years. The automatic braking has engaged a couple of times each year. There is never any traffic in front of me when this happens. It only happens on multi-lane highways. It has happend during the day and at night. Weather is always clear when it happens.

2018 Honda CR-V has had the automatic emergency braking system engaged about 6x so far while driving on the highway when no other vehicle was in sight. I would be driving and then the auto brake system would kick in and slow the truck down or just completely stop.

There have been a few instances in which the emergency breaking system activated based on false positives. Examples include certain overhead highway signs (one in particular is a regular trigger in a certain lane of a certain road in my area) as well as dips in the road or construction areas or the bottom of hills, in which the sensor presumably reads the upcoming hill as an actual instruction. In one of these instances a car behind me locked up the brakes to avoid hitting me as my car applied the brakes unnecessarily. These issues have occurred repeatedly and are often able to be reproduced.

When steering to the left, at moderate to high speed, the steering (steering wheel) sticks to the left such that the driver must intentionally "un-steer" the vehicle. Started around 3k miles and has become gradually worse until now at 12k miles. Last incident caused me to cross double-yellow line and could easily have caused a head-on collision (by sheer luck it did not). Took CR-V to Weir Canyon Honda and they did something (?) and I could not reproduce. A week later it's doing it again. I see NHTSA investigation EA23003 estimating 500,000+ vehicles affected. Why is this not a recall yet?

My vehicle component or system that I believed malfunctioned was the steering wheel. My vehicle steering wheel feels at times like it got lock while driving on the highway and off the highway. My vehicle is available for inspection at any time upon request. Due to this problem with my vehicle I panic for a couple of seconds, took my eyes off the road, without keeping a safe distance with other drivers. The problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. I have taken my vehicle for regular services and have reported this problem to my dealer. But nothing has been found wrong with my vehicle as of today. My vehicle has not been inspected by the police, insurance representative or others since my dealership has not found anything wrong with it. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the problems. I have taken my vehicle for other concerts as well that have been corrected but this with my steering wheel.

It only happens when I have the car in cruise control mode. The car dramatically slows down for no apparent reason. It has happened 3-4 times in the 3300 miles I have driven the car. It may be related to changing lanes while on cruise control.

On a number of occasions, my car will sound the emergency braking system beep, flash the BRAKE alert on the drivers message screen, and less frequently, apply the brakes independently when nothing is in front of my car. The warnings flash when the car thinks I am too close to a car turning out of my lane but several times this has happened when nothing is in front of me at all. On at least two occasions, full braking was applied when nothing was in front of the car.
