Audi Environmental Foundation, Audi do Brasil, and the non-governmental organization Litro de Luz Brasil recently concluded their fifth collaborative project, delivering solar lighting solutions to rural communities in Brazil. The latest effort focused on the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul, where 178 solar lighting units were distributed to 158 families across eight communities. This initiative aims to provide reliable lighting to areas without access to a permanent power supply.

Expanding Access to Sustainable Energy

From June 4 to 10, 2026, volunteers, including employees from Audi do Brasil, worked alongside local residents to assemble and install the lighting systems. This hands-on approach, guided by Litro de Luz Brasil, ensured community involvement in the project. The 178 compact lighting units provided included 158 individual solar lamps and 20 larger solar-powered streetlights.

The communities benefiting from this Audi Pantanal solar lighting project were Aldeia Uberaba, Barra do São Lourenço, Amolar, Aterro do Binega, Chané, Bonfim, Paraguai Mirim, and Ilha Verde. Local residents were also trained as 'ambassadors' to manage the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the new lighting systems, fostering long-term sustainability.

Five Years of Community Impact

This recent Audi Pantanal solar lighting project marks the fifth time the Audi Environmental Foundation, Audi do Brasil, and Litro de Luz have partnered to bring light to remote Brazilian regions. Over the past five years, the partnership has supported a total of 2,985 people, with contributions from 39 Audi do Brasil volunteers and 95 Litro de Luz Brasil volunteers.

Previous initiatives include projects in the Amazon region in 2022 and 2025. In 2022, approximately 200 Amazonian communities received over 150 lamps and 30 streetlights, benefiting 650 residents. In 2023, the focus shifted to the southern coast of São Paulo, specifically Cananéia and Ilha do Cardoso, where 40 Audi volunteers helped distribute 140 solar-powered lamps and streetlights. The Xingu region of Mato Grosso received 170 lights, benefiting about 700 residents, in 2024. The 2025 campaign in the Amazon, along the Rio Negro, provided 199 solar-powered lamps and streetlights to 177 families.

The Technology Behind the Initiative

Litro de Luz develops three distinct lighting technologies for these projects: solar lamps, solar streetlights, and indoor lighting systems. The portable solar lamps are designed for mobility, featuring a PVC structure, a PET bottle, a battery, LED lights, and a solar panel for charging. This design allows residents to use the lights both inside and outside their homes.

Indoor lighting systems consist of an LED module, a solar panel, a battery, and a control panel. A key aspect of the Litro de Luz model is involving residents in the operation and maintenance of these systems. Local ambassadors are trained to ensure proper functioning and to maintain contact with the NGO. Batteries that degrade are returned for recycling and promptly replaced by Litro de Luz, ensuring continuous service.

The ongoing partnership between Audi and Litro de Luz continues to address energy access challenges in Brazil's rural areas, providing practical, sustainable lighting solutions and empowering local communities through training and involvement.
