Understanding Aluminum Filiform Corrosion

FCA Caribbean Warranty Bulletin ID-25-11 (Rev. A) addresses the process for repairing aluminum filiform corrosion on various FCA US LLC vehicles, including the 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator. This bulletin, effective for repairs opened on or after August 18, 2025, updates existing policies regarding paint repairs and panel replacement for vehicles still under an active corrosion warranty. It also clarifies the Vehicle Digital Imaging (VDI) pre-approval process and outlines guidelines for warranty goodwill.

This bulletin revises the Multi-panel Corrosion Repair and Replace Labor Operation Procedures (LOPs) to streamline the process. It applies to all FCA US LLC vehicles currently covered by an active corrosion warranty in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Cost estimates are not required for these repairs.

Symptoms of Filiform Corrosion

Owners may notice filiform corrosion as flaking or blemishes on the vehicle's panels. This can appear on exterior surfaces or, in some cases, on inside panels that are not visible when doors, the hood, or the tailgate are closed. The bulletin provides visual examples of flaking on seam areas and blemishes on panels, which are key indicators of this type of corrosion. Specifically, flaking found on the seam of a panel or a blemish on the seam are common indicators.

Diagnosis and VDI Pre-Approval Process

To diagnose and approve repairs for aluminum filiform corrosion, a specific Vehicle Digital Imaging (VDI) pre-approval process is often required. Dealerships must submit photos of the affected areas to verify the corrosion and document the customer's concern. A photo of the VIN placard is also necessary for the VDI pre-approval process.

Important notes regarding VDI pre-approval:

• Vehicle Digital Imaging (VDI) pre-approval IS NOT required for outer surface corrosion for vehicles still under active corrosion warranty.
• VDI pre-approval IS required for any potential non-cosmetic repairs on the inside panels, non-visible from the exterior with the door/hood/tailgate closed, for vehicles still under active corrosion warranty.
• When VDI pre-approval is required, the dealership must submit a pre-approval request to verify the images show actual filiform corrosion and to document the customer's concern.
• For all claims not requiring pre-approval, dealers still need to take photos of the affected area(s) and submit them with the Repair Order to support the repair. These photos MUST include identification of the affected body panel and show surface corrosion and pitting.
• For corrosion on the edge of the outer surface that wraps to the hem, photos of both the outer surface and hem are required for replacement.
• When submitting for pre-approval, dealers should select "Sheet Metal" as the category.
• If all attachments do not fit within the Digital Imaging portal, they should be emailed to [email protected] with the subject line "VIN and Dealer Code".

Repair Procedure Summary

This bulletin updates the procedures for both single-panel and multi-panel corrosion repairs and replacements. For Jeep Wrangler (JL) and Jeep Gladiator (JT) vehicles, a redesigned hinge with a new shim addresses corrosion issues. These hinges MUST be replaced as a set (upper and lower per component) to ensure visual consistency. Hinges on other doors should not be replaced if they show no signs of corrosion.

Labor Operations (LOPs) are available for various repair scenarios, including single-panel repairs (e.g., LOP 23755302 for a single front door repair) and replacements (e.g., LOP 23855311 for a single front door replacement). Multi-panel LOPs are also provided, such as 2375MP01 for Hood and Front Doors repair or 2385MP01 for Hood and Front Doors replacement. These LOPs include labor and material allowances for painting, de-trimming, and blending.

Warranty Goodwill Grid Instructions

This bulletin provides specific instructions for handling aluminum filiform corrosion concerns for vehicles where the corrosion warranty has expired but are still within the 6th year. "Valid documentation" refers to any Repair Order, Customer Care Case number, or an email to the Business Center.

• If the customer has valid documentation (dated prior to warranty expiration) describing the corrosion concern, they will not be charged a customer participation amount. Dealerships should "Evaluate and “Accept”" the Grid result and submit the warranty claim with "RA" in the authorization field.
• If the customer does NOT have valid documentation, they will need to participate in the repair costs as outlined by the Warranty Goodwill Grid. The claim should be submitted with "PA" in the authorization field.
• If a warranty claim is submitted more than 90 days after the pre-authorization approval date, the claim narrative must state that the repair was previously approved by VDI.

Non-Reimbursable Items

Certain items are not reimbursable under this warranty bulletin. These include, but are not limited to:

• Hazardous material disposal fees
• Shop supplies
• Pre and post scans
• Cleaning, waxing & sanitizing supplies
• Protective covers or storage bags
• Fitting/aligning panels
• Resetting electronics functions
• De-nib and polish
• Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery
• Upgraded anti-corrosion/paint protection
• Body shop administrative fees
• Towing and storage fees
• Additional labor, parts, or services not supported by the Collision Service Bulletin.

What Owners Should Know

This Warranty Bulletin ID-25-11 (Rev. A) replaces previous Corrosion Warranty Bulletins ID-22-23, ID-23-03, and ID-23-25. It is a process change communication, not a coverage change. Always verify coverage using DealerCONNECT or wiADVISOR VIP. Any future changes to Labor time or Material Allowance should reference the information listed in Labor Operations via DealerCONNECT.
