The contact owns a 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman. The contact stated that while the spouse was driving the vehicle at 70 MPH, abnormal handling occurred, followed immediately by a loud knocking noise. The driver pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and discovered the rear left axle had fractured, detached, and was hanging on the ground. The contact stated the failure was known within the Porsche community. Following the failure, a "possible rear gear fault driving permitted" message was displayed on the instrument panel. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where diagnosis confirmed a rear left axle failure and a damaged drivetrain, requiring a complete axle replacement and a new gearbox.
