While my car was being inspected at the Mercedes dealer from who I purchased the car, I was informed that the rear subframe was rusting out, needed to be replaced immediately (at the cost of $4250) as it is unsafe to drive and that the result could be catastrophic if I continued to drive it. They explained that they are having this problem with other C300 models in the US, Canada and Germany, but there has not been a recall in the USA. They told me that it might be the road salt as this is only happening in the North East. If this were true than I would think other parts of the undercarriage would be rusted or this would occur in other models too. They are well aware of this issue but have neglected to contact owners therefore putting my life and the life of my family at risk. The NHTSA needs to investigate and recall these vehicles immediately before someone is killed. Seems to me they are using sub standard materials and while having knowledge of this issue, should be held accountable. Thank You.

I was driving on the highway i hit the brakes as traffic was starting to build up and the car veered into the right lane and all of a sudden and almost got hit by a tractor trailer. It felt so scary, weird when hitting the brakes after that. I took it to my mechanic immediately and he said the rear subframe is rotted out and DO NOT DRIVE THIS CAR!!!!!!!!! I asked please get me an estimate on how much to fix. He called me later in the day and said it was a 8 month wait for the part and the Mercedes dealer said it is a VERY VERY VERY common problem on these cars. There are Thousands and thousands. There is a defect when manufactured and MERCEDES does not want to do a recall or step up to the plate in the United States. There is a recall in Canada and Europe that replaces the part. What are they waiting for till some gets hurt seriously or killed. Now i do not have a car to use for who knows how long and Mercedes should be ashamed. Please advise. This is a real scary safety issue. Please advise. Thank you [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

- #11491541October 30, 2022SUSPENSION, SUSPENSION:SUBFRAME/MOUNTING BRACKET
While driving home last night (with passenger), I experienced a sudden pull to left and wobble\oscillation of the car when I made steering corrections to prevent vehicle from going into oncoming traffic. Car seemed to behave normally except whenever I applied the brakes. I proceeded home, where I inspected for the obvious such as brake calipers, pads. rotors etc. Then I removed the rear left tire. This was due to a clunking sound that seemed to come from that area. Everything looked OK until I saw a front lower suspension part (a plastic covered pressed metal strut connecting the lower part of the wheel\rotor assembly to large U-shaped frame member which had multiple welded attachments and brackets) just hanging there unattached on one (forward) end. The bracket it was bolted to was just sheared off. Looked like it rusted to the point of finally tearing itself off of the frame. There was no warning of this condition either by sensors/lights/etc. or the performance of the vehicle when driving it. The defective braking action was sudden. This is NO SMALL ISSUE! After reading of the numerous reports of this very same problem I have to say I am amazed that NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO PREVENT THE FIRST DEATHS AND INJURIES THAT WILL MOST LIKELY OCCUR FROM THIS. This is a danger to the occupants of the principle vehicle, pedestrians, as well as other vehicles in the immediate vicinity, moving or stationary. This can happen at high speeds, slow speeds, in traffic with other vehicles around the car or humans on sidewalks. I can clearly see that this is not a small repair as it looks like the entire rear assembly would need to be taken apart and reconstructed in order to replace the part. I have also read that this issue is not only common but that it has been recalled in Canada and Europe by Mercedes for repair. I guess we are waiting for the first deaths to occur before our American safety agencies can take action? Really?

Rear suspension crossmember mounting point for one of the control arms broke off allowing control arm to fail. Possible entire wheel assembly could now fail creating dangerous driving conditions especially at higher speeds. Took to a shop and confirmed. Called Mercedes dealership and they said it was not covered by a recall even though in Europe I believe it is. Many websites have said this is an ongoing and common problem.

The contact owns 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, he heard air coming in through the OSI cover. Once the contact arrived at his destination, he noticed that the front sunroof panel had detached from the vehicle. The dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under warranty and that the vehicle was already repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V197000 (Structure). The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under warranty and that the dealer was not obligated to repair the vehicle free of changer. The failure mileage was 40,000.

I have a 20212 Mercedes C300 with 70,000 miles. I took it into the MB dealership for inspection and was told that the rear subframe was rusted through. The subframe's failure also caused the brake lines to rust to the point of needing to be replaced. The subframe repair will cost $5,900 and the brake line replacement will cost around $1,200. The dealer told me the car couldn't be driven safely, so I had to leave it there to be repaired. There were no interior warning alarms about the structure or the brakes. According to forums on Benzworld.org, this is a known problem on these specific cars and the component is replaced for free by MB in Europe.

The rear subframe rusted and completely cracked. The car started to shake violently while I was on the highway. Fortunately I was in the right hand land and was able to slow down. I was driving in the car with my mother. My understanding from the mechanic is that we were lucky not to be killed or hurt anyone else. The frame is completely cracked. I called the local dealership and they said this is an extremely common problem. So common they have multiple vehicles on the lot waiting for parts, and the waitlist is indefinite. There were absolutely no warnings on the car.

The rear subframe of this vehicle is made of faulty materials and has completely rusted out leaving the suspension components which connect to it in danger of failing. The left rear wheel connecting trailing arm has already detached from the subframe. There have been numerous complaints about the 2010-2013 Mercedes C300 W204 rear subframe, many of which share exactly the same failure as my own. It is a known problem with this generation of Mercedes.

Rear subframe / crossmember failed due to corrosion. The rest of the car is in great condition, with no rot or corrosion. This is a regularly serviced vehicle. The part is recalled in other countries. Aside from the lack of a USA recall - the manufacturer is not providing any replacement parts. I am now without a car, and could have been killed if I didn't get it checked out. I do not see how it is legal to not provide parts to solve a life threatening issue caused by poor manufacturing. Should I drive the car anyway until it causes an accident ?

I have a 2011 Mercedes C300 that I purchased as a Certified Vehicle - this car was purchased at The Mercedes Dealer in Kansas City. I believe I purchased it around 2013 - I have recently found out that the rear sub frame is completely rusted out. I have had the car repaired at my auto shop - Not a MB dealership, as there was not a dealership that was able to see the car in any reasonable amount of time and the car was not safe to drive. The only way I found out about this rusted out subframe was due to the control arm breaking off - This car was very dangerous to drive and in essence, it is probably a good thing that the control arm broke as this could have resulted in a loss of steering on the vehicle and a very dangerous accident! I have been reading online and speaking with MULTIPLE people who have had the same situation with this rear subframe. This is CLEARLY an issue with MB and clearly an issue that they have been made aware of. When I called the NMB service department they were a month out to just look at the car - and the part is on back order I was told - which CLEARLY indicates a lot of these rear sub frames are being replaced. I am attaching various articles / forums online that I just, at a glance, composed a list of. There are a TON of stories of these sub frames rusting out for various models. Seems to be tied mostly to the C300 vehicles. I am attaching pictures of this rusted out subframe and an invoice that I paid to have the car repaired for this issue. The ironic thing is when I was at this auto shop, there was another C300 sitting out front that had just had the same rusted out subframe replaced. Mercedes has a recall in Canada for this SAME issue and other countries have acknowledged this is a major safety issue. A rear subframe should not rust out and leave the driver with no way to steer the car. Mercedes has refused to acknowledge this is an issue in the US.

ode P052E : Positive Crankcase Ventilation Regulator Valve Performance. This seems to be a common problem with the C300.It's not an easy fix. MB hasn't addressed this common issue. Also strong smell of gas coming into the cabin during start up. Took car to Keys Van Nuys Mercedes in North Hollywood and was no recall. We are inhaling these fumes and they blamed it on a hose that expands and fumes escape into the cabin. Wanted to charge for the repair but I refused.

Horrible fuel smell coming through Air conditioning vents on cold start up. This presents a safety hazard as there is an obvious fuel leak on a still late model vehicle with no safety recall in sight.

- #11490902October 25, 2022FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
The component that failed was the fuel injector and spark plug. A few months prior to this incident, I was making a left hand turn, when the accelerator completely gave out. I was making the left on a blinking yellow arrow, luckily the on coming car was not coming at me fast or I would've been in an accident due to the accelerator failing. I had to pull over, turn the car off and then back on to reset it. I was told by the dealership service center that they could not find anything and that there have been no complaints or recalls. After about 8 months of owning the vehicle, it started to have problems turning over when the engine on/off button was pressed. I was repeatedly told that they could not do anything if it did not happen in the dealership service center. This past week on 10/20/2022, while I was driving down the freeway, when I went to accelerate and at that moment the vehicle began to stutter/shake uncontrollably. After that, any time the accelerator was pressed it would shutter/shake. My vehicle was towed to a dealership. Come to find out, cylinder one was coding. They found out that the fuel injector was stuck open. According to the service advisor, that issue was causing a misfire. I was told that they replaced the fuel injector and the spark plug. According to the vehicle report I was given, 1 reman injector, 4 TS spring F In, 1 spark plug, and there was a core return (not sure what that means). The check engine light came on right away. In addition to the incidents above, I have had the forward collision alert come on when nothing is in front of me. I worry that one day it will cause my vehicle to engage the brakes when nothing is around.

The contact owns a 2013 Mercedes-Benz C300. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 35 MPH and attempting to abruptly stop the vehicle to avoid a crash, the vehicle suddenly drifted into the opposite lane while depressing the brake pedal. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the rear control arms had failed. The vehicle was driven to the local mechanic who diagnosed that the failure was due to severe subframe corrosion. The contact was informed that the rear subframe and rear control arms needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 86,000.

- #11490679October 24, 2022STEERING, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
When I started my car, the dash did not reveal park, drive, or reverse. It illuminated with a warning light indicating an Electronic Stability Problem (ESP). Research revealed this to be an important safety feature and that the Mercedes-warning-lights-electric-stability-control may have problems with traction control requiring attention. The ESP light was NOT flashing for the system to intervene – as the car was parked in my garage. It did not light up with the word ‘OFF’ to assess whether it may have been inadvertently deactivated. The light stayed on indicating a suddenly improperly working ESP system. The light remained on after stopping and restarting the engine several times as the dealer maintenance technician suggested concluding with my vehicle being towed to Mercedes Benz of Augusta for service. I am not sure if the MB mechanic reproduced the issue as they discussed several other potential failure points before resolving to replace an item in the steering control module. Experiencing this alert, I became more concerned that a safety inspection may not have been part of the last maintenance service. This is my third Mercedes and I make sure to keep up with all my maintenance. I had never seen this warning light before. Up until this time the only warning light I had seen in my car was for low air in my tires. My safety was not at immediate risk. I am glad my car was not able to be driven, as I would have hated for it to stop while I was out and about. I am a proud Mercedes Benz owner as they are world renown for the safest cars on the road. My car has just over 25,000 miles and it was unimaginable that it would have this kind of failure. I should not be held accountable to pay for a safety failure that I should be part of required maintenance checks. An additional periodic Mercedes required safety inspection could prevent this potential breakdown while providing another measure to protect the life of Mercedes Benz owners.
