My car has approximately 14,000 miles on it and was purchased brand new. It still has 1,000 miles to go before the next servicing. Saturday I when driving approximately 40 miles an hour, the engine suddenly cut off and the car stopped in the middle of the road. I was able to start the car and drive for approximately 15 minutes before it slowed to 3mph and shut off again. I called the dealership where I purchased it and explained what happened. Initially they said they had not serviced the car in a year. I let the car sit for a day then checked all the fluids. The coolant level was fine and so was the oil. Monday, it cut off twice on my way to work. I drove to the nearest dealership and left it there. I had to rent a car as no loaners are available. It has been at the dealership for 5 days. They thought they fixed but when they test drove it, the car cut out again. Later that day, I received an email from Hyundai Blue link with an Automatic DTC Notification that a possible condition has been detected with my Engine Control System.

Vehicle will not go out of 3rd gear when on the interstate. The vehicle will go pass the redline and hit the fuel cut off and will not accelerate. Have to slow the car down and attempt to speed up again. Vehicle has almost been in accident multiple times due to almost being rear ended because can not get the vehicle up to speed.

Engine light turned on, was told by dealer to keep driving on it unless engine light was blinking or the car started driving differently. Made a right turn and during the turn the vehicle shut off in the roadway. Brought car to dealer, dealer stated the car was low on oil and that was the reasoning, the car was not due for its routine maintenance yet for the oil. Oil was changed. Engine light came on four more times after that and each time was another reason. Within the month I was told it was the oil, a sensor, and then the ignition coil.

- #11506135February 7, 2023ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL
The electrical system is not fulling shutting down after the vehicle is turned off and the 12 volt battery drains. This also caused the Instrument Panel to fail and made the car not safe to drive as we had no speedometer or odometer. The battery drain happened over and over again. The car is a lemon. This car has been at the dealer since December 30th, with no fix in sight.

July of 2022, vehicle went in due to battery not charging. Vehicle kept at Temecula Hyundai repair until September 2022 for EV battery replacement. Upon return, EV battery still didn't change. September 2022 vehicle went back for repairs. Returned October 2022. Was told battery overheating sensor was faulty and was turned off. As a result the EV battery will not be able to charge beyond 90%. Was told nothing else they could do to repair the car. When I asked if there was an increased risk of battery getting too hot, the response was " their should not be". My concern is that their going to be an overheating issue while the vehicle is changing at my home. Contacted Hyundai about it; they did an investigation and determined there was reason for them to buy back the vehicle. They offered to buy it back at less that what the buy out the finance company states. It is now February 2023. Hyundai still has yet to buy back the vehicle at what is owed on it, and still have no idea how to due the proper repairs. They still cannot assure that the battery won't overheat and there are no sensors to notify if it does.

The turbo. When you accelerate the RPMs go high up to 4 and the car will barely move. Had it repaired (under warranty). But few months later, happening again. This is a scary situation as the car behind you almost rear ends you if you are at a light, making a turn, etc..

- #11504227January 28, 2023ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM
After just 18 months and about 5,000 miles, the heater/defroster system stopped working. My local Hyundai dealer (Dick Hannah Volkswagen/Hyundai) confirmed the failure. Even after installing a new heater unit, the dealer reported the system is still not working. My car has been at the dealer since 1-17-23. Having no defroster is a serious safety issue in the winter here in Portland, Oregon, as the car can become unsafe to drive when the windows fog-up (as is common in the winter here). There were no warning lights or notifications to indicate that anything had failed; I just noticed that heat was not coming on, and only cold air was blowing through the defroster vents.

- #11503418January 24, 2023VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
The adaptive cruise control does not engage in a timely fashion when activated. The speed reduces 8-12 mph before it kicks in. Speed always decreases 5 to. 21 mph on every hill. This inconsistency causes traffic to bunch around me. The dealership says nothing can be done to fix the problem. This problem is so frustrating and dangerous that I no longer use the feature.

Chatter or transmission slips from full stop only when engine reaches operating temperature. Does not seem to happen when cold. Vehicle was serviced by Hyundai dealership and said it could be a software fix. They updated software but still have problem. My brother was an auto mechanic and suggested the problem could be related to the transmission oil pump and or defective parts associated with clutch..

My daughter left our house in our 2022 Hyundai Kona on Friday, 1/13/23, to head back to college which is 5 hours from home. A little more than an hour down the road after leaving our house, she said that the car started sounding strange, so she called her mother. At this time, she was on a two lane country road with no safe options or areas to pull over. My wife advised my daughter to continue driving until she found a safe place to pull over. As she continued onwards, she came to a stop sign in the countryside and the car died on her. She restarted it and was able to continue her trip. Several miles later a light came on, but she was still not to a safe area. By the time she got to a safe place, other lights had come on, and the car died in the parking lot. The car would not restart so we called a tow truck to take the Kona to the nearest Hyundai dealership which is where it sits today. Upon inspection, the Hyundai dealership discovered that the drain plug was missing from the oil pan which caused the oil to drain and ultimately led to catastrophic engine failure. The engine needs to be replaced at a quote of $9753.08. The Kona’s last oil change was on 10/19/22 at 8,630 miles and was done a third party oil change facility. The mileage on the Kona when delivered to the repairing Hyundai dealership is 13,775. No engine lights or oil change needed indicators were on before our daughter began her trip on 1/13/23. I contend that this is a known issue with Hyundai engines based off of internet research that indicates that the NHTSA is actively investigating this exact issue of the drain plug falling out and causing catastrophic engine failure. This situation is a safety issue because the engine could have seized while in motion on a two-lane country road causing a wreck.

The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Kona. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V301000 (Engine). The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer for the recall repair. The vehicle was inspected, and no repairs were needed at the time. The contact stated on January 1, 2023, while driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and continued driving to his destination. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed there was no oil in the engine. Additionally, the contact was informed that the timing chain and engine needed to be replaced. The mechanic performed an oil change. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the timing chain and engine replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.

- #11501691January 13, 2023FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
Emergency braking system stopped the car suddenly. There weren't any cars in front of me or next to me. Thankfully I was driving slow through a road in our parking lot and there were no cars behind me. It has only happened once so far. Obviously it startled me and made me wonder how safe the car is to drive. I haven't said anything to the dealer, but plan to when I go in for yearly maintenance in a week. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to this happening.

- #11501418January 12, 2023UNKNOWN OR OTHER, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
I have a 2020 Kona SE AWD and have a problem with a Check Forward Collision Sensor error that happens infrequently. When it happens, you get a ding then on the dash in a large graphic "check forward collision sensor" then BANG the brakes are applied for a split second and the car violently drops into a lower gear and revs until you turn the car off and "reset" the system. This has happened 4 times in the last 2 thousand miles. Been to the dealer twice and they cannot recreate the problem, so they can not fix anything. When this happens, its feels like a collision. It is scary and magnified at highway speed. It has happened at highway speed and low speed, both day and night.
