Lexus has unveiled the significantly updated 2027 NX compact crossover, which will transition to an exclusively electrified lineup featuring both hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. This new model is expected to be available in global markets by the end of 2026, building on the NX's established popularity since its 2014 debut.

Electrified Powertrains and Performance

The 2027 Lexus NX incorporates the latest hybrid drivetrain technology, aiming for improved power and efficiency. A new e-Axle assembly integrates the transaxle, motor, and Power Control Unit (PCU) into a more compact and lighter package, contributing to a lower center of gravity. Further efficiency gains come from advanced drivetrain electronics and the use of silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors in the inverter.

The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid model receives a newly developed Lithium-ion battery, offering an 8% increase in output and a 30% boost in capacity. PHEV grades will also feature DC fast charging capabilities and a dedicated Power Charge Port Door. The battery's transverse cell layout enhances lateral body rigidity while maintaining a low center of gravity.

Engine block rigidity has been improved with reinforced areas between the engine and transaxle, which helps reduce noise and vibration. Updated Electronic Control Unit (ECU) programming refines the transition between electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) driving modes. The E-Four electronic all-wheel-drive system now offers continuous AWD operation, improving stability in various driving conditions, including low-traction surfaces.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics and Design

Lexus engineers focused on evolving the "Lexus Driving Signature" for the 2027 Lexus NX through fundamental performance enhancements. Body rigidity has been increased across all NX grades with reinforcements to the unibody, a new floor cross member, and redesigned suspension towers. These structural improvements contribute to sharper handling, reduced road noise, and enhanced ride comfort.

For models without an Adaptive Variable Suspension System, new shock absorbers with ultra-low-speed valves provide responsive damping for a refined ride. The steering system has been updated with a steering wheel diameter reduced to 14.2 inches and a Variable Rack Gear for a more responsive steering ratio. Accelerator control has been refined for a lighter, more linear response, and a new brake control system aids stability during cornering maneuvers.

The exterior design evolves the "Vital Tech" theme, presenting a more dynamic and active character. Functional elements like headlamps and cornering lamps are seamlessly integrated into the grille, which itself features a mesh design for improved aerodynamics and cooling. Black accents replace chrome on exterior mirrors and moldings, and the rear features Lexus’ first Double L Signature lamps with an illuminated Lexus logo. Nine exterior colors are available, including new Shaded Ivy and Incognito.

Advanced Cabin Experience and Safety

Inside the 2027 Lexus NX, the cabin emphasizes openness and relaxation. The instrument panel features a horizontally aligned 12.3-inch digital meter and a standard 14-inch touchscreen for navigation and multimedia. The steering wheel and Responsive Hidden Switches have been redesigned to enhance functionality and brand consistency. Linear and ambient illumination create a refined atmosphere, with options like perforated metal speaker grilles for the Mark Levinson audio system. Five interior color options are offered, including new Abalos and F SPORT-exclusive Radiant Red.

For Luxury and F SPORT grades, the available Sensory Concierge system coordinates illumination, music, climate control, seat temperature, and fragrance across three modes—INSPIRE, RADIANCE, and REVITALIZE—to tailor the cabin environment. Multiple fragrance experiences, such as Shinmei, Seiyo, and Hanya, can be selected independently or integrated with visuals and music.

Safety features are updated with Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, which includes enhanced detection capabilities and expanded driver-assistance technologies. This system aims to provide greater confidence and peace of mind by offering broader situational awareness and support.

The 2027 Lexus NX represents a significant update, moving entirely to electrified powertrains and introducing a suite of technological, design, and safety enhancements. These changes aim to offer consumers a more refined driving experience and a luxurious, personalized cabin environment, reinforcing the model's appeal in the compact crossover segment.
