Jett Lawrence, a prominent figure in motocross, will not compete in the 2026 SuperMotocross Playoffs. American Honda confirmed today that Lawrence will undergo Jett Lawrence ankle surgery, an injury that has caused severe pain since December of last year. This decision aims to address the persistent discomfort and ensure his long-term career health.
Persistent Injury Forces Withdrawal
Lawrence's ankle injury originated during training last December. Despite the initial setback, he managed to compete through the entire AMA Pro Motocross series. During this period, Lawrence secured four round victories and ultimately finished second overall in the standings, behind his teammate Hunter Lawrence.
However, the Australian rider experienced varying degrees of pain throughout the motocross season. The injury was significantly aggravated during the opening moto at Ironman Raceway, leading to a renewed and intense level of pain and instability in his ankle. This exacerbation prompted the decision for further medical intervention.
The Jett Lawrence ankle surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. Specialists at the clinic will manage Lawrence's recovery process following the procedure.
Lawrence Prioritizes Long-Term Recovery
Jett Lawrence stated that the decision to sit out the SMX series was made with his team to ensure his ankle returns to 100% for the longevity of his career. He acknowledged enduring pain throughout the summer, doing everything possible to win the outdoor championship, but noted his ankle had not felt right since the season's start and worsened after Ironman.
Lawrence emphasized his goal to regain his previous form and, most importantly, to be pain-free as he prepares for the next year. He expressed appreciation for the patience of his team, family, and fans during his recovery period.
Brandon Wilson, Manager of Racing & Experiential at American Honda, affirmed the team's full support for Lawrence's decision. Wilson highlighted the importance of his long-term career, stating that while another SMX title would be desirable, ensuring Lawrence returns as close to 100% as possible is paramount.
Honda HRC Progressive's SMX Lineup
With Lawrence sidelined, Honda HRC Progressive will field a competitive lineup for the SuperMotocross Playoffs. The team's roster includes newly crowned 450 AMA Pro Motocross Champion Hunter Lawrence, who finished a close second to Jett in last year's SMX series.
Joining Hunter Lawrence will be Jo Shimoda, the reigning 250 Champion, and Chance Hymas. The SuperMotocross Playoffs opener is set to take place on September 12 in Columbus, Ohio.
Wilson conveyed the team's anticipation for the upcoming playoffs, expressing confidence in Hunter, Jo, and Chance to be highly competitive. The team aims to continue its strong performance in the series despite Jett Lawrence's absence. This Jett Lawrence ankle surgery will allow him to focus entirely on rehabilitation.
This update confirms a significant change for the 2026 SuperMotocross Playoffs, with Jett Lawrence focusing on recovery from his ankle injury. The Honda HRC Progressive team will move forward with its remaining roster, aiming to contend for the championship as Lawrence begins his rehabilitation.
