Honda-powered teams are preparing for the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, the third new event of the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. The street race, set in Washington D.C., will air live on Fox starting at 1 PM ET on Sunday, August 23, 2026, with pre-race coverage beginning at 11:30 AM ET. This event commemorates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, featuring a unique circuit through the nation's capital.

Honda's Dominance on Street Circuits

Honda has maintained a strong record on street courses, winning all five such races held so far in the 2026 season, with four of these resulting in podium sweeps. This success builds on a history of winning every inaugural street course race in IndyCar since multi-manufacturer competition returned in 2012. Notable past wins include Scott Dixon in Houston in 2013 and the 2012 Detroit Belle Isle return, Marcus Ericsson at the 2021 Nashville Grand Prix and Markham this year, Alex Palou in downtown Detroit, and Kyle Kirkwood at the inaugural Arlington event.

This season, Alex Palou has secured street circuit victories at St. Petersburg, Long Beach, and Detroit. Kyle Kirkwood took the win at the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington, and Marcus Ericsson won the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham. These results have contributed to Honda's 169-point advantage in the manufacturers' championship, with all five Honda-powered teams achieving at least one podium finish and leading laps across these events.

Championship Implications in Washington D.C.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington presents a critical juncture in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship battle. Alex Palou, driving the Honda-powered #10 car for Chip Ganassi Racing, currently holds a substantial 133-point lead in the drivers' standings. His season includes victories at St. Pete, Barber, Long Beach, Detroit, Nashville, and Portland.

Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood is currently second in the championship standings. Other contenders will need strong performances in front of the Capitol building to challenge Palou and keep their hopes alive for the 2026 title. The outcome in Washington D.C. could significantly impact the championship race.

Acura's 40th Anniversary and Broadcast Details

Acura will be prominently featured on Marcus Ericsson's #28 Honda for Andretti Global, marking its fourth appearance on an NTT INDYCAR SERIES car this weekend. This special livery celebrates both America's 250th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the Acura brand, which launched in the United States on March 27, 1986, as the first Japanese luxury automotive brand. The collaboration aims to engage motorsports fans through the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

Beyond the main race broadcast on Fox, complete flag-to-flag coverage will be available via the INDYCAR Radio Network and SiriusXM INDYCAR Nation (Channel 160). Practice and qualifying sessions will be aired on FS1 and FS2, with specific times for practice one and the morning warm-up on FS1, and second practice and qualifying on FS2.

The inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington is a key event for Honda, with its teams and drivers aiming to extend their street circuit success and solidify championship positions. The race offers a significant moment for the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season as it unfolds in the nation's capital.
