Kirkwood Secures Third at Mid-Ohio, Honda Leads Manufacturers

Kyle Kirkwood achieved a third-place finish at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, moving him to second in the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship. Honda also holds a slim lead in the manufacturers' standings after a caution-free race.

Kyle Kirkwood secured a third-place finish at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid, on July 5, 2026. This strong Kirkwood Mid-Ohio finish propelled the Andretti Global driver back into second position in the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship standings. Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) US also maintained a narrow lead in the manufacturers' championship following the event.

Race Performance and Championship Standings

Kyle Kirkwood started the Honda Indy 200 from 10th position and advanced seven spots to claim his third-place podium. This Kirkwood Mid-Ohio finish marks his 10th top-10 result in 11 races this season, which includes a victory at the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington. Kirkwood now trails championship leader Alex Palou by 56 points.

Alex Palou, driving for Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, finished fifth for the second consecutive race. Palou currently leads the championship with four wins this year as he pursues his fifth NTT INDYCAR SERIES title. Other notable Honda-powered finishes included Will Power in sixth, Graham Rahal in 12th, and 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist in 13th.

Honda's Manufacturers' Lead and Acura's Presence

Honda currently holds a slim advantage in the manufacturers' championship, leading 892 to 868 points. The event at Mid-Ohio was significant for Honda, being close to its Marysville and East Liberty auto plants, with over ten thousand Ohio-based Honda employees attending. David Salters, President of HRC US, acknowledged the effort required to achieve the podium result and the ongoing work to reach the top step.

Marcus Armstrong, driving an Acura-sponsored Indy car for Meyer Shank Racing Honda, finished 14th after starting 24th, gaining 10 positions. This marked the third appearance of Acura branding in the series this season, coinciding with a 14% increase in IndyCar viewership compared to 2025.

Race Conditions and Series Milestones

The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio was notable for running all 90 laps without a single caution period or competitor retirement. This race also coincided with the two-year anniversary of the introduction of the IndyCar Hybrid System. Drivers commented on the physical demands of the caution-free race, with Kirkwood noting the challenge of maintaining focus and hydration.

The 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES will continue with oval racing at the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix Nashville Superspeedway on July 19th.
