New BMW X5 Fifth Generation Offers Five Powertrain Options

BMW has unveiled the fifth generation of its X5 Sports Activity Vehicle, which will be the first model from the brand to offer five different drive system technologies. This includes gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell options. Production for the new BMW X5 is scheduled to begin in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA.

Diverse Powertrain Options

The new BMW X5 will offer a broad range of propulsion systems. These include petrol and diesel combustion engines, both featuring 48V mild hybrid technology, alongside plug-in hybrid variants. For the first time, the X5 lineup will also feature an all-electric model, the BMW iX5, and a hydrogen-powered version, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The all-electric BMW iX5 will utilize the sixth generation of BMW's eDrive technology, providing a range of up to 845 kilometers (525 miles) in the iX5 60 xDrive model. This electric variant supports fast charging, incorporates 800V technology, and offers bidirectional charging capabilities. Its high-voltage battery uses new cylindrical cells measuring 120 millimeters in height.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen, set for a later market introduction, will be BMW's first hydrogen-powered production vehicle. It features a third-generation fuel cell system, in-car hydrogen storage with BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage technology, and a high-voltage battery. This system aims for a range of up to 750 kilometers (466 miles).

Design and Interior Updates

The fifth-generation BMW X5 incorporates the design language of the Neue Klasse, giving it a distinctive appearance. Key exterior elements include an upright front end, a vertically aligned BMW kidney Iconic Glow grille, and new "double-X" light icons. The vehicle also introduces BMW Winglets, which are innovative recessed door handles that facilitate the opening of electrically powered doors.

Inside, the cabin features clear structures and uncluttered surfaces, emphasizing driver orientation. New decorative surfaces, including optional slate and glass materials, contribute to the interior's quality. The X5 integrates core technologies from the Neue Klasse, such as the BMW Panoramic iDrive display and BMW Operating System X. This includes a free-cut Central Display, a BMW 3D Head-Up Display, and an optional BMW Passenger Screen.

Production and Driving Dynamics

Series production of the new BMW X5 will commence in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, which has manufactured the X5 since its original launch in 1999. The all-electric BMW iX5 will be the first electric vehicle produced at this facility. A new factory for sixth-generation high-voltage batteries, located adjacent to Plant Spartanburg, will operate without fossil fuels for normal operations.

The market launch for initial variants of the new BMW X5 is scheduled for late November 2026, with all-electric and plug-in hybrid versions following in early 2027. Standard driving dynamics features include adaptive suspension and a nearly 50:50 axle load distribution. Optional upgrades like Adaptive Chassis Control and Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with roll stabilization will be available, initially for all-electric and plug-in hybrid models. The BMW iX5 models and the iX5 Hydrogen will also feature BMW Soft-Stop for smoother braking.

With its expanded range of powertrain options, updated design, and integrated Neue Klasse technologies, the new BMW X5 aims to maintain its position in the Sports Activity Vehicle segment. The introduction of all-electric and hydrogen variants signifies BMW's continued diversification of its vehicle offerings for future consumers.
