Audi has initiated production of its new A2 e-tron battery-electric vehicle at its Ingolstadt plant. The first units of the compact electric model rolled off the assembly line in September 2026, with Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder in attendance. This production launch highlights Audi's efforts to streamline manufacturing processes and enhance efficiency across its operations.
Streamlined Development and Production
Audi significantly reduced the development timeline for the A2 e-tron, bringing it to production readiness 21 months faster than previous vehicle projects. This acceleration was achieved through refined processes and leveraging insights from earlier vehicle programs, minimizing coordination efforts and expediting pre-series maturity.
The company also focused on reducing complexity in the A2 e-tron's manufacturing. By using fewer production-relevant part numbers, Audi has decreased the need for extensive logistics and storage space within the plant. This approach simplifies material supply and contributes to overall operational efficiency.
For the first time at its Ingolstadt facility, Audi is implementing the "string-of-pearls" production principle, a method previously successful at its Neckarsulm plant. This system determines the sequence of customer orders six days before assembly, allowing parts to be produced and delivered by suppliers in the exact order required for the assembly line. This fixed sequencing reduces process complexity and eliminates the need for certain storage and sequencing areas, improving cost-effectiveness.
Advanced Automation and Digitalization
The Audi A2 e-tron production introduces fully automated wheel installation at Ingolstadt, replacing semi-automated bolting stations for chassis preassembly. This upgrade utilizes robotic stations for both front and rear axles, increasing precision and speed. In the body shop, Audi employs "bin picking" technology, where camera-guided robots use image processing to identify and pick up components directly from disordered containers, reducing ergonomically demanding tasks for employees.
Digitalization plays a crucial role, with the "Edge Cloud 4 Production" industrial cloud networking the assembly process. This cloud centrally controls systems for commissioning control units and providing operator guidance, eliminating the need for over 450 industrial PCs in assembly. This centralized control enhances data management and operational flexibility.
Furthermore, Audi is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) assistants across its production sites. These AI tools, such as the Supply Chain Chatbot and Maintenance Chat, assist employees in quickly accessing expert knowledge, process documentation, and troubleshooting solutions. These digital aids aim to support the workforce in navigating complex production environments.
Workforce Development and Strategic Impact
The successful launch of the Audi A2 e-tron's production is also attributed to targeted workforce development. Audi implemented a comprehensive training program, combining hands-on experience on the assembly line with virtual qualifications, to prepare employees for manufacturing the fully electric model. This initiative enhances electromobility expertise at the Ingolstadt site, securing future-relevant knowledge within the plant.
The A2 e-tron is positioned as a key product for the European market, developed and manufactured in Ingolstadt. Audi states it is the most efficient vehicle the company has built, designed to make electric mobility accessible for daily use. Its production demonstrates Audi's strategy to develop products faster and manufacture them more efficiently, thereby strengthening industrial value creation and competitiveness in Germany.
The vehicle's body production is integrated with that of the Audi A3, showcasing the flexibility of the Ingolstadt facilities. Over 1,200 production components, including robot welding guns and approximately 250 robots, are being reused from other Audi models, highlighting a resource-efficient approach to manufacturing.
The start of Audi A2 e-tron production signifies a strategic shift for the manufacturer, focusing on accelerated development, enhanced production efficiency through automation and digitalization, and continuous workforce skill development. This approach aims to strengthen Audi's position in the electric vehicle market and reinforce its manufacturing capabilities.
