Honda HRC Progressive Faces Tough SMX Opener in Ohio Mud

The Honda HRC Progressive team encountered significant challenges at the opening round of the SMX World Championship in Columbus, Ohio, on September 14, 2026. Adverse weather conditions, including thunderstorms and heavy mud, led to a difficult race day, resulting in lower-than-expected finishes for all three riders. The team is now focused on improving their performance in the upcoming rounds.

Challenging Race Conditions Impact Performance

The SMX World Championship opener was heavily affected by severe weather. Thunderstorms throughout the morning forced race officials to delay the schedule, cancel qualifying sessions, and shorten both motos. The track at Columbus was exceptionally muddy, creating treacherous conditions that tested every rider.

These difficult circumstances directly impacted the Honda HRC Progressive team's ability to perform. Team Manager Lars Lindstrom acknowledged the tough weekend, noting that the team's performance in muddy Supercross conditions needs significant improvement. He emphasized that the first playoff race, with single points, was the preferred event for such struggles, ahead of the double and triple-point rounds.

Individual Rider Struggles and Standings

In the 450 class, Hunter Lawrence faced a particularly difficult day. After starting just inside the top 10 in Moto 1, he experienced two falls in the first half of the race. The slippery track and damage to his bike prevented him from recovering, leading to a 21st-place finish. Despite an improved start in Moto 2, Lawrence again encountered misfortune, ultimately salvaging an eighth-place finish for 15th overall. He currently sits sixth in the 450SMX championship standings with 32 points.

The 250 class saw the return of reigning champion Jo Shimoda, racing alongside teammate Chance Hymas. Both riders started Moto 1 well but lost positions. Shimoda struggled after losing his goggles, finishing 12th, while Hymas worked his way to ninth. In Moto 2, Hymas started strong, running inside the top three and securing a fifth-place finish, earning him seventh overall. Shimoda finished 13th in Moto 2, also placing 13th overall. Hymas is currently fourth in the 250SMX standings with 33 points, while Shimoda is 11th with 20 points. Notably, reigning 450 champion Jett Lawrence was absent, recovering from ankle surgery on September 9 and targeting the 2027 AMA Supercross series.
