Honda Racing Launches HRC Formula R Synthetic Engine Oil

Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US), in collaboration with Phillips 66, has launched HRC Formula R, a new line of full synthetic engine oils. This marks HRC US's first consumer engine oil product, designed for both street and track applications in Honda and Acura vehicles. The Honda HRC Formula R oil became available at Honda and Acura dealerships starting June 15, 2026.

Product Development and Standards

The Honda HRC Formula R oil line was developed by HRC US, drawing inspiration from motorsports technology. It is manufactured using high-quality U.S.-sourced base oils combined with an advanced additive system. This formulation aims to provide superior wear protection, durability, and performance for Honda and Acura engines.

Modern engines, particularly those with turbocharging and direct injection, place high demands on engine oil. The Formula R oil is engineered to meet or exceed the latest gasoline engine oil performance standards, API SQ and ILSAC GF-7/GF7A. These standards, introduced in 2025, focus on improving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing engine protection against wear.

Viscosity Grades and Engine Protection

HRC Formula R is offered in six viscosity grades to accommodate a wide range of Honda and Acura models. These include 0W-16, 0W-20, 0W-40, 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30. The 0W-40 formulation is notably the same used in the championship-winning IMSA Civic Type R TCR race car, highlighting its high-performance capabilities.

The oil provides protection against common engine issues such as low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), rust, and bearing corrosion, which are critical for smaller, high-output engines. It also safeguards turbochargers, timing chains, and valve trains, contributing to extended engine life under severe operating conditions. For Honda hybrid owners, advanced corrosion inhibitors offer additional benefits, while maintaining backward compatibility with older performance engines. The balanced additive chemistry also protects emission control system catalysts and oxygen sensors.

The HRC Formula R oil is now available for purchase and service at authorized Honda and Acura dealerships nationwide.
