Symptoms

Repair Procedure Summary

This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 03-003-25 REV. A outlines a procedure focused on cleaning and lubricating the axle shaft and hub splines to resolve the Jeep Wrangler rear axle noise. The repair involves several steps:

1. Disassembly: The brake caliper, rotor, wheel speed sensor, and parking brake cable are removed. The four hub nuts (Fig. 1) are removed and discarded.
2. Hub and Axle Removal: The hub is extracted, and the axle shaft, hub, and bearing assembly with the backing plate are removed from the axle housing.
3. Cleaning: Both the axle shaft splines and hub splines are thoroughly cleaned using brake cleaner and a wire brush to remove any fretting or corrosion (Fig. 2). After cleaning, forced air is used to remove any remaining debris.
4. Lubrication: Wheel bearing grease is applied to both the hub splines and axle shaft splines, ensuring the entire spline interface is coated (Fig. 3). The tube flange inside diameter is lubricated with 75-85W sump lube (Fig. 4).
5. Reassembly: The axle shaft is installed into the hub. The axle shaft, hub, bearing assembly, and backing plate are reinstalled, aligning the wheel speed sensor hole. Four new hub nuts (Fig. 1) are installed. The parking brake cable, wheel speed sensor, brake caliper, and rotor are reconnected and installed.

Required Parts

To perform this repair, the following parts may be required:

• 05083150AA: Mopar® Wheel Bearing Grease (1/100 of the 14.5 ounce cartridge)
• 68003275AA: Hex Flange Lock Nut (Tube flange to hub unit nut)
• 68651258AA: O-Ring (Wheel Hub Bearing) - Inspect the existing O-ring for damage and replace if needed.

All repairs performed under TSB 03-003-25 REV. A are reimbursable within the provisions of the vehicle's warranty. The labor operation number for this service is 03-20-01-99, with a labor time of 0.6 hours and a failure code of ZY.
