2024 BMW X5, X6, X7, 7 Series, 3 Series Starter Motor Check

This service campaign aims to prevent situations where the 2024 BMW X5 engine does not start due to a faulty starter motor.

This action applies to vehicles from the G0x (X5, X6, X7), G12 (7 Series), and G20 (3 Series) series equipped with B58C/B58D engines. Owners of affected vehicles should have their starter motor checked, and replaced if necessary, to ensure proper vehicle operation.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of this issue is the engine does not start. This occurs because a bolting fault on the long bolt screws can cause the magnets within the starter motor to twist. When this happens, the power of the starter motor decreases, making it unable to crank the engine effectively.

How to Check if Your Vehicle is Affected

Vehicles requiring this campaign will show an "Open" status when checked in BMW's internal systems such as AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary, or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry. If your vehicle has already been delivered, BMW advises that the measure be carried out the next time the vehicle enters the workshop for service.

Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions

BMW has identified that the root cause is a mechanical fault within the starter motor itself. To diagnose the problem, technicians will perform the following steps:

1. Read out the fault memory of the vehicle.
2. Navigate through the diagnostic system using the following path: Troubleshooting > Functional structure > Drive > Engine start and Automatic Start/Stop function > Pinion starter motor > Starter motor and starter motor relay > Engine start test module.
3. Initiate a function check and follow the instructions provided by the test module.

If the starter motor is diagnosed as "defective" during this process, replacement is required.

Important Warnings for Owners

Owners should be aware of specific limitations regarding this Service Action SIB 12 06 24. If a potentially defective starter motor is diagnosed, but the issue is not caused by the starter motor itself—for example, due to problems with wires, plug connections, or the supply to the pinion starter motor—these related issues are beyond the scope of this Service Action. Such repairs will need separate diagnosis and may not be claimable under this technical campaign. Customers will be notified if this situation arises.

Additionally, the TREAD Act reimbursement procedure does not apply to the repair remedy provided by this Service Action.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair process for Service Action SIB 12 06 24 involves a thorough diagnostic check of the starter motor. If the diagnostic test module confirms the starter motor is "defective", it must be replaced. Technicians will follow repair instructions REP 12 41 020 for removing and installing the starter motor.

It is important to note that some vehicles affected by SIB 12 06 24 may also be subject to technical campaign 0012230600 (B12 05 24) for programming control units (DME/starter motor). BMW recommends ensuring both technical actions are processed at the same time, if possible.

Required Parts

If replacement is necessary, the following parts will be used:

• Starter motor: Part Number 12 41 8 671 505 (Quantity: 1)
• Hexagon bolt: Part Number 07 12 9 907 896 (Quantity: 3)

Small parts like screws, nuts, and seals must be replaced according to ISTA repair instructions and invoiced under the special repair code of this technical campaign.

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be processed via normal claim entry using specific work packages and labor operation codes. The Repair Code for this action is 0012240600, described as "G0x G12 G20 B58C Check and, if necessary, replace starter motor."

Labor operations include:

• Work Pkg #1 (Plusposition): Labor Operation 00 76 937 - Checking the starter motor with diagnosis tester (5 FRU)
• Work Pkg #2 (Main work): Labor Operation 00 76 300 - Checking the starter motor with diagnosis tester (6 FRU)
• Work Pkg #3 (Associated work, includes Recall 0012230600): Labor Operation 00 76 938 - Checking the starter motor with diagnosis tester (1 FRU)
• Additional work (when required): Labor Operation 00 76 939 - Replacing the starter motor based on test module results. Labor allowance varies by model:
  • 8 FRU for 740i
  • 11 FRU for M340i
  • 12 FRU for X5, X6 All
  • 13 FRU for M340i xDrive
  • 16 FRU for 740i xDrive
