Why the BMW iX Head Unit GPS Fault Occurs

This problem stems from unfavorable software installed in the vehicle. Specifically, after installing software version 1020-24-03-500 or higher, the head unit (MGU22) fails to correctly recognize the type of telematics module present in the vehicle. This misidentification causes the system to believe the telematics module is not functioning or is absent, resulting in the BMW iX head unit GPS fault where GPS data is ignored.

Service Action SIB 65 08 24: What it Addresses

BMW has issued Service Information Bulletin (SIB) 65 08 24 to correct this software-related issue. The primary solution involves programming the head unit. For vehicles that had the option code SA 6PA (Personal eSIM) retrofitted via Technical Support, this option must also be removed from the vehicle during the service action.

This repair is designated as "MOBILE FRIENDLY," meaning it can be performed by qualified mobile assistance teams for centers that qualify. BMW recommends performing this procedure on all affected vehicles before customer delivery or during the next service visit if the customer has already taken delivery.

Repair Procedure Summary

The service procedure for SIB 65 08 24 involves specific steps depending on the vehicle's current software level and whether the SA 6PA (Personal eSIM) option was added:

1. For vehicles with SA 6PA (Personal eSIM) and an I-Level between 1020-24-03-500 and 1020-24-03-540:

   • Technicians must first check the vehicle's current Vehicle Order for SA 6PA using AIR or ISTA. If SA 6PA is present, the factory Vehicle Order must be loaded into the vehicle using ISTA's "Vehicle Management" > "Vehicle Modification" > "Immediate Measures" > "Import Vehicle Order" path. The source for the Vehicle Order download should be "Online," and the "Production Version" must be selected. Selecting the production version will install the factory Vehicle Order, potentially removing retrofits or conversions.

2. For vehicles with a software level between 1020-24-03-500 and 1020-24-03-540 but WITHOUT SA 6PA (Personal eSIM):

   • Technicians proceed directly to programming the vehicle.

After addressing the SA 6PA condition (if applicable), the vehicle is programmed to I-level 1020-24-03-553 or higher using ISTA 4.47.2X (estimated release date May 8th, 2024). Key steps during programming include connecting a battery charger (referencing SIB 04 23 10), connecting the programming system (ISTA 4), determining and accepting the measures plan, and performing a vehicle test to delete fault memory if needed. After programming, functionality of the navigation system must be checked, and it must be verified that there is no eSIM option in the Mobile Device app.

Important Warnings and Notes

• Mobile Friendly Repair: This repair is eligible for mobile assistance for qualifying service centers.
• Pre-Delivery Action: Dealers are instructed to perform this procedure on all affected vehicles before customer delivery.
• Software Reprogramming: ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software during this process.
• Battery Charger Requirement: Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply during programming (refer to SIB 04 23 10).
• Vehicle Order Import: When importing the factory Vehicle Order, selecting the "Production Version" will remove all retrofits/conversions. Technical support should be contacted if necessary.
