Symptoms

Owners of affected Audi e-tron vehicles may notice that the front door lower cover trim appears loose, as if it has pulled away from the door. Another common symptom is that the trim is not flush with the cover trim on the rear door.

Technical Background

Audi has identified that the two main pieces forming the door cover trim can become disengaged. This typically occurs if the trim is subjected to sudden force, such as contact with a foot during entry or exit from the vehicle, or during forceful closing of the front door. This issue is specifically known to affect the front door cover trim.

Audi notes that an improvement to the attachment mechanism for the door cover trim is currently under development.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair for an Audi e-tron loose door trim does not require removing the entire door cover trim from the vehicle. Instead, the two main pieces of the lower door cover trim are reconnected using a specialized bonding process.

Technicians will first slightly separate the inner and outer trim pieces using a plastic wedge to access the bonding area. The surfaces where the adhesive will be applied are then thoroughly cleaned with an all-purpose cleaner (D 00940104) or isopropanol alcohol, followed by a 5-minute drying period. Next, a primer (3M™ AC77 Adhesive Primer) is applied to both sides of the upper channel and allowed to dry according to its flash-off time.

After priming, a 2K plastic adhesive (D 180KU2A1 or D 180KU1A1) is filled into the upper channel. The inner trim is then immediately pressed upwards, towards the outer shell, and then back down to re-engage the two pieces correctly. Any excess adhesive is removed promptly. Finally, painter's tape is applied to hold the trim pieces together while the adhesive cures.

This bonding procedure is to be applied to both front door lower cover trims, even if only one side exhibits the symptom. If the trim pieces are not yet disengaged, technicians are instructed to disengage them for the purpose of performing the repair.
