When stopped at a red light, the car started beeping, the check engine light turned on, "steering power low" was displayed, the brake pedal could not be pushed in, and the steering wheel was locked. After putting the car into park and pressing the engine start/stop button, the beeping stopped and the car was able to drive again. The car had a full tank of gas and it was raining outside. Not only did this happen in the middle of a busy intersection, but while the weather conditions were difficult which could potentially put safety at risk.

ENGINE
Multiple times now, my 23 Corolla cross LE has stopped in traffic. Each time, I was sitting at a red light and I heard a long beep come through my car. Then, a sign flashed onto my car dashboard that said “check engine, low power steering, press brake firmly to reactive”. I pressed firmly and nothing happened. I shifted my car into park, turned it off to wait a couple of seconds and turned it back on. Luckily I was only 1-2 miles from home so it didn’t happen again. This has happened in wet conditions each time. I have taken it to the dealership the first time it happened and they found nothing in the diagnostic run. I connected with Toyota headquarters and they at least know of my situation but have offered no assistance. I’m grateful this has happened to me when I’ve been at stop signs, but I take highways to work and I can’t not go to work because it’s raining and my car might stop on me.

I have now had two separate instances where the start / stop system in my car led to the engine stalling out at a stoplight, which was very dangerous. The car displayed messages to press the brake firmly to restart engine, which did not work either time, and that power steering would be low. Both times, I had to put the car in park and complete restart the car. Please note that unlike other reports, it was not raining nor were the windshield wipers activated during either instance.

AIR BAGS
Per Toyota this vehicle is under recall due to faulty airbag on the front passenger. Per the Toyota customer advocate, Toyota has not identified a remedy and meanwhile no one should ride in that seat takata airbags have been dangerous for years. I can't help but believe that toyota knew about the problem when I got the car February 2023.

Vehicle has cut off multiple times at stoplight, stop sign, etc. Error message flashes on instrument panel “ENGINE STOPPED STEERING POWER LOW”. Most recently this week 5 times in one day (6 times during the week). Each time has been during rain with windshield wipers running. Must put car in park and restart engine.

For the 3rd time, my 2023 Corolla Cross LE has completely shut off when stopped at a light. Similarities across events include: > it has been raining, so windshield wipers are on > auto-stop/start has been initiated > no warning lights appear before this happens; it just shuts off and the screen says "Steering power low" This seems to be a documented occurrence, per this forum in which the same problem is detailed by numerous contributors: https://www.corollacrossforum.com/threads/vehicle-malfunction-at-start-stop.396/ The sudden shut-down of the vehicle is safety risk because, in a frantic state of mind, one could end up holding up traffic and generating more road rage, never mind the state of mind that I'm left in after this happens - totally anxious and frazzled! After the 2nd time this happened, the car was brought to the dealership where they kept the car overnight to try and recreate the problem. They didn't manage to (sunny days), but they communicated with Toyota about it. After this 3rd time of it happening today I am reaching out to the NHTSA.

While stopped at a stop light, the automatic on/off initiated as usual. However, twice in the past 24 hours the engine has stopped and the driver display provided a message stating “engine stopped” and prompting me to depress the brake harder to start the engine—this action did not restart the vehicle and it had to be put in parked and fully turned off and on to restart both times. The display also stated “steering power low” when the engine stopped message displayed.

My partner was driving in stop and go traffic. One of her stops the engine just shut down. She needed to restart. The most recent issue is the rear sensor. It shows it is blocked. When I checked the back bumper the round spot, where I guess the sensor is, was pushed in. I then checked the front bumper, one of those circular spots appear close to being detached. Another issue, the phone charger located in front of the gear handle never worked. I am going to the dealership today. The vehicle was purchased January 2023 and has about 2500 miles on it.

SERVICE BRAKES, UNKNOWN OR OTHER, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
My brand new 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross has 2 issues: 1) The 'pre-collision' feature brakes when I don't need it to. I told Toyota that I've almost got into car accidents but they said they 'can't turn it off'. 2) There is paint peeling from my front bumper for no reason. Brian Kessler at Marietta Toyota said “it's likely because when I ordered my car in 'white', the bumper was black, so they painted it without primer”. They keep telling me that "they'll call me regarding this issue", but they haven't. This vehicle's pre-collision system is over-sensitive as it continues to attempt to prevent an accident by taking control of the vehicle when I don't need/want it to. It suddenly brakes when I need to continue in motion to avoid a particular hazard, potentially causing an accident. I’ve been driving for 30+ years, and I have an impeccable driving record, so I don’t need my car to ‘think’ for me and take control of the vehicle. The service department at Marietta Toyota told me to contact Toyota.com to have them give me a ‘waiver’ with Toyota, stating that if I am involved in a motor vehicle accident as a result of this feature, then Toyota will be responsible. I spoke with at least 3 Toyota representatives at your Brand Engagement center, and was told that this feature cannot be removed, nor is there any ‘waiver’ form. Then they told me that since there is nothing 'wrong' with the car, there is nothing they can do. The last representative I spoke to told me that my complaint has been recorded and is on my ‘Toyota file’. He agreed to email me a copy of my complaint and the case number attached to my record, but I never received an email from him. I can't get them to return my calls, and I'm tired of driving to and from the service department just for them to tell me that they'll 'call me', when they have not. I am beyond angry as my issues regarding this vehicle are not resolved, and I feel betrayed by a company that has falsely gained my trust, and then destroyed it

I was stopped at a red light in a very light rain with intermittent wipers going. Engine stopped as it does when stopped. When light turned green and I pressed the gas, nothing happened. Car rolled forward but due to grade not engine. Display message said something like Engine stopped. Press brake firmly. That’s all I remember. There was a car behind me honking loudly and frequently. I sat there for a minute or two trying to get the engine going again. Y moving the shifter. I was able to take the car in and out of park multiple times, which I should not have been able to do if the engine was off, so the engine was not off. I think I must have finally hit the engine start switch but I don’t remember how many time. Once the engine started again the car without further problem.

I've only had my Corolla Cross for about 5 months. However, I have received an error message twice indicating a voltage problem and low steering. I am taking my vehicle to the dealer today. However, I have seen that there have been multiple problems with voltage issues with other people who have the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross. Please be sure to file this complaint under the Corolla CROSS and not just Corolla. Thank you.

When automatic start/stop is engaged and I am stopped at a light, the engine does not restart when I release the brake. There are audible and visible indicators of the problem on the dash, with "IGNITION ON" and "Engine Stopped Press Brake Firmly to Restart" displayed on the dash. I had to put the car into Park in order to manually restart the engine. The problem seems to happen on drizzly days when I use the wipers on various intermittent settings. This is a safety to my car and others because of the engine stopping. The vehicle has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. I contacted multiple dealers, but was told that they would need to actually reproduce the problem to diagnose, making it difficult to schedule a service appointment due to the specific weather conditions required. The dealers told me that I would have to pay for the service appointments even though the problem occurred with less than 400 miles on the car, then again with less that 1,000 miles.

It was raining and wipers were on. I was at a red light, and all of a sudden the engine cut off. The dash read a message "Engine Stopped Steering Power Low" and then "Turn engine on". The engine light was on until a started the car back up again. It is a 2023 Corolla Cross LE with about 1,400 miles on it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, LANE DEPARTURE: WARNING
May 14, 2023 (Sunday) It was a rainy day, didn't use my car at all. May 15, (Monday) "The Nightmare Began" !!! I turned on my car and (7) symbols on the dashboard appeared and lots of buzzing that freaked me out ! I was in a state of panic and went inside my house and got my husband and asked him to come take a look at the car cause it was going CRAZY ! We looked at each other trying to figure out what was happening to the car ? This is a list of the symbols on the dashboard: 1. Brake System Light (Yellow) 2. Check Engine Light 3. LDA Indicator Light (Orange) 4. PCS Warning Light (Yellow) 5. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control Indicator Light (Orange) 6. Slip Indicator Light (Yellow) 7. Driving Assist Information Indicator (Yellow). I immediately took pictures of the dashboard for proof that I wasn't make this up. On Tuesday May 16th, I started the car and again the same thing occurred ? This time I drove the car to the dealership and explained to the service guy what the car was doing so he said they would do a diagnostic test on the car? My husband picked up the car on Wednesday, May 17th, he was told that everything was fine with the car but they re-set the computer. Thursday, May 18th, it started all over again when I started the car, Friday, May 19th, Saturday, May 20th the same I drove the car and a message appeared on the screen "Drive-Start Control System". The Crazy thing was that you could drive the car but between 12 and 1 p.m. all the lights would start to go away ? On Monday, May 22nd, it continued, but this time something new happened? I put the car into Drive Mode and the car Jerked and I put it back into Park Mode and it Jerked again so, I put it back into Drive Mode and it Jerked again so I pressed the gas pedal and the Parking Brake was on but I had not put the parking brake on? So, I drove the car and this time the transmission started to act up as well? On, Tuesday, May 23rd and Wednesday, May 24th the same thing so, we took car to dealership

It was raining and wipers were on. I was at a busy intersection at a red light. All of a sudden, the engine cut off and the dash read a message "Engine Stopped Steering Power Low" and then "Press brake firmly". Pressing the brake did nothing. The car would not start. When the light turned green, I had to just turn on my hazard lights to let the cars behind me know. It created a huge hazard for me and the oncoming traffic because my car could not move. After the immediate hazard had passed. I was able to put it in park, turn the car off (while at the red light) and turn it on again. It is a 2023 Corolla Cross with about 500 miles on it.

While driving home, it was raining and had wipers going. I'd never driven in the rain yet since purchasing. I was at a stop light, and the auto start/stop was activated so the car was stopped. When I tried to drive upon the light turning green the car turned off and I got a message that said "engine stopped. Steering power low". Then I got another message saying "press brake firmly to restart engine" which didn't work. I had to switch to park. Turn it off and then turn it back on in order to get moving again.

Likely Start/Stop feature (the feature that turns off the engine when stopped to improve fuel efficiency, then automatically restarts when you need to go). * How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - Car unpowered while in traffic. * Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - No * Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - No * Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, warning indicators only came on as/after the car shut off. When coming to a stop, the engine will turn off (this is expected). However, occasionally when this happens, an error message displays on the screen and the engine does not turn back on. This leaves you at a stop light/sign with a powered off car requiring putting the car in park and restarting the engine. So far, each time this has happened it was raining and the windshield wipers were on.
