According to Ray Skillman Southside Kia, located in Greenwood, Indiana on [XXX], the “exhaust engine lock pin” broke inside the engine causing metal to shear inside the engine causing engine failure and needing engine replacement. Prior to this diagnosis the car was stalling during running in the middle of traffic potentially causing an accident or collision with other vehicles. This is a known defect in the manufacturers engines, yet there is no recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

In february 2025 I had taken to the garage the first moment the check engine light came on and had to have the catalytic convertor replaced, costing me over 4300.00 It could have caught on fire the garage said. I have all documention and reciepts for all work since I have had the vehicle I am the 2nd owner and still making payments on this. I have kept up to date on every oil change and have the proof of that also. The car has been burning oil excessively and now the garage has determined it needs a engine replacement or rebuild costing over 5000.00 and the car only has 93,000 miles on it. I know KIA is known for issues with their engines burning excessive oil , but i found no recalls of it for my VIN.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where an oil consumption test was performed. The contact stated that on the first test, the vehicle had consumed 1.1 quart of oil after 1,946 miles. The contact stated that on the second test, the vehicle had consumed 1/2 quart of oil after 1,047 miles. The dealer informed the contact the oil consumption test met the manufacturer's guidelines, and the contact was referred to the manufacturer for assistance. The manufacturer was contacted but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 51,000.

I am reporting a recurring safety issue with my Kia vehicle that began around Labor Day 2025. The vehicle has abruptly shut down multiple times while I was driving on public roads in Hillsborough County, Florida. These shutdowns occurred without any dashboard warning lights, including while stopped at red lights and while in motion, creating dangerous traffic situations. Despite having a scheduled service appointment on September 5, 2025, I took the vehicle to the dealership a day earlier—on September 4—due to the increasing frequency and severity of the issue. Upon reviewing my service history (dating back to 2022), I found no documentation that the battery had ever been tested, despite regular multi-point inspections performed at the dealership. A battery test performed during the September 4, 2025, visit revealed that the battery was failing. I was required to replace it at a cost of nearly $400. The service team confirmed that the battery was draining and likely the cause of the vehicle shutting down. This issue could have resulted in a serious accident. I believe the failure to identify the battery problem earlier represents a potential safety oversight.

The contact owns a 2021 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle shuddered, and there was an abnormal rumbling and clunking sound coming from the engine. The contact had received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V099000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), and the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the piston-ring noise sensing system (PNSS) software was installed; however, the failure recurred and progressively worsened. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road and restart the vehicle. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure persisted, and the vehicle could not be restarted. Additionally, the vehicle experienced excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the starter was replaced; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The dealer diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to the recall, but the dealer informed the contact that the repair could not be covered under the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure several times, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

New updated testing for recall regarding Piston Oil Rings seems to be faulty. My engine failed with previous testing, which is consistent with the issues my engine is having. However, the new testing claims that my engine has passed even though it is evident that my engine is not in good standing and should have failed. Extreme oil consumption is the number one sign of the faulty piston oil rings, which my car does. I have to add oil every couple of weeks.

Out of no where my engine just started knocking. No engine light came on, no oil light came on, no warnings at all. I just got an oil change 12/18/2024, with 2 top offs 04/23/25 and 07/23/25. And August 24 th my engine started knocking. I took it to Midtown kia on 08/25/25 and they told me Kia customer care won't cover the engine recall.

Sunroof failure, spontaneously exploded. Fortunately I was not driving the car when it happened or could have caused an accident. Went to my car one morning and the sunroof looked like an earthquake for no reason. No damage, car was parked my driveway and was definitely not vandalism. Dealer said to contact Kia directly and report the incident to them because they would get nowhere with the factory and I should contact them. I also had a left front drivers door glass break that I originally thought was vandalism but nothing penetrated the glass, no rock or anything found and 2-3 video cameras I reviewed many time and not see anyone breaking the window. Makes me think it is the same problem with some kind of defective glass.

- #11684758September 3, 2025SERVICE BRAKES, ENGINE
The contact owns a 2020 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while her son was driving at approximately 35 MPH and going up a slight hill, the vehicle stalled. The contact's son said multiple unknown warnings illuminated. The son depressed the brake pedal and felt that it was very hard to depress. The son was able to restart the vehicle and continued on to his destination. The contact stated that the engine stalling failure had occurred once, however the failure of the brakes had occurred several times. The contact's son stated that when he was slowing the vehicle, as he was in reverse (R) backing out of a parking spot, he was unable to stop the vehicle using the brake pedal and had to use the emergency brake to stop. The son stated that another brake failure occurred as he was slowing for traffic. The son stated that he depressed the brake pedal and it was stiff and the vehicle was not stopping. The front end of his vehicle crashed into the rear end of the vehicle in front. The son said that when the brake failure occurred the check engine, oil check and the battery warning illuminated. The son stated that he used the emergency brake to stop. The police were called and wrote a report, both of the vehicles were drivable and there were no injuries. The son stated that there were minor dents and scratches on the front bumper and grill of his vehicle and dents and scratches on the rear bumper and trunk of the other vehicle. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer where it was determined that there was no mechanical issue with the brakes or the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000. The contact stated that in 2021 the vehicle had an engine failure and the engine had been replaced.

On [XXX], my 2014 Kia Soul received the PI2002A Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) ECU update at Southwest Kia, 39650 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway South, Dallas, TX 75237. After the update, the engine sustained catastrophic damage (a hole in the block). Southwest Kia informed me that Kia denied the engine replacement under warranty, which is inconsistent with the official PI2002A bulletins (NHTSA #MC-10172065 and MC-10189615). These bulletins clearly state that the short block warranty is extended and that engine replacement is covered for this type of failure. I am requesting an immediate review of my case, a written explanation for the denial, and a timeline for resolution, as my vehicle is currently inoperable. Attached are service records, photos of the engine damage, and copies of the PI2002A bulletins for reference. In November 2024, I was having issues with oil consumption and my car stalling while driving. I took it into Bob Sight Kia and explained that I'm constantly having to change or add oil to my car. They ran diagnostics and "fixed" the issue without any requests of maintenance records. The very next day after I picked it up, my oil light came on. I changed my oil November 2024, January 2025, March 2025, April 2025, May 2025. On May 10, 2025, while driving back from a family emergency, my transmission went out. I had it towed to Bob Sight Kia and was told the transmission would need replaced and it is under warranty, they did not request maintenance records then either. The transimission was replaced and I picked up my vehicle on June 5, 2025. My car started stalling again July 2025 and August 2025, I changed the oil each time. I took it back to Bob Sight Kia and was told I needed to provide maintenance records this time. I provided receipts of the above dates I changed my oil but was told my claim is being denied due to not having maintenance records from 2022 and 2023. I have called Kia Consumer Affairs and Bob Sight Kia. The general manager at Bob Sight Kia told me my car had been misdiagnosed in November 2024. I have explained to Kia Consumer Affairs exactly what I have been told by the dealership but they still refuse to replace the engine. My car currently has 73k miles and I am having to change my oil every 1500 miles. I believe my vehicle is under the engine recall and Kia will not honor it

For some reason my 2019 Kia Soul is not included in the previous engine recall. My vehicle is experiencing severe oil burn which has caused the failure of a second catalytic converter. The first was replaced on 11/25/2024 and it is being replaced again on 8/28/2005. This failure is due to improperly heat-treated piston oil rings that lose their ability to seal, leading to cylinder wall damage, increased oil consumption, and potentially engine failure or fire.

I WAS DRIVING FOR LESS THAN TEN MINUTES ON AN EXPRESSWAY WHEN MY KIA SOUL SHUT DOWN. I HAD JUST CHANGED LANES. FORTUNATELY, I HAD MOVED TO THE FAR LEFT WHICH WAS ADJACENT TO THE EMERGENCY LANE PRIOR TO THE SHUT DOWN. I WAS ABLE TO STEER THE CAR TO THAT AREA AND BRAKE. THE CAR HAD COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN OUT OF THE BLUE. I COULD NOT ACCELERATE. THANK GOD THE BRAKES AND STEERING WERE STILL WORKING. AFTER A FEW MINUTES I TRIED TO START THE CAR. IT TURNED ON QUICKLY. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO THE NEAREST EXIT. THE CAR SEEMED TO WORK FINE. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A KIA DEALER. I WAS INFORMED THAT CERTAIN 2014 KIA'S MAY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SHUTTING OFF. MY CAR IS IN THEIR HANDS. I AM TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH KIA. IF THEY SAY MY CAR ISN'T ONE OF THE "CERTAIN" 2014 KIA'S THAT WERE RECALLED AND DON'T PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, I WILL BE VERY UPSET. THIS IS NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR. A CAR SHOULDN'T JUST COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE WITH THIS CAR.

The contact owns a 2020 Kia Soul. The contact previously received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V259000 (Engine). The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where an inspection was performed, and the contact was informed that the vehicle had passed the inspection. The mechanic stated that no repairs were needed, and the recall was removed from the VIN. The contact then stated that while driving 30 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for an inspection, and the contact was provided a diagnostic test fee. The contact declined the diagnostic test and took the vehicle to an independent mechanic. The mechanic determined that there was a defect with the piston oil rings. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V259000 (Engine). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
