My car suddenly caught fire. I am assuming it was the engine because the fire started under the hood of the car. I never received any information regarding a recall or a safety issue but when the Vin was checked by my insurance inspector the recall came up.

On April 25, 2022 the airbag light illuminated on the 2012 Kia soul. It was taken to the shop a Kia dealer on May 3, 2022. We were told by the mechanic that a contact assembly clock spring malfunctioned and if not repaired would be dangerous to drive the car because the airbag may not deploy. We inquired whether this issue was covered on the Kia airbag recall number SC229. Because this recall only covered Kia souls July 21, 2013-June 20, 2014.

I keep my car very well maintained I get oil changes n filters every 3 to 5000- miles and supposedly this recall was done I have this problem now out of no where.. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CATALYTIC CONVERTOR Recall Created: Feb 26, 2019 Owners Notified: Apr 17, 2019 Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CATALYTIC CONVERTOR Recall Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Kia Soul vehicles equipped with 1.6L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure. Consequence: Piston damage may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. A broken connecting rod may puncture the engine block allowing engine oil to escape. The leaking oil may contact the exhaust, increasing the risk of a fire. Corrective Action: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the Catalytic Overheating Protection Engine Control Unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. In addition, the catalytic converter will also be replaced if it has been damaged. Depending on the extent of any damage, the engine may also be replaced, free of charge. The recall began April 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC176. Other Notes: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov

The engine threw a rod while we were on the highway due to the recalled part. Our safety was at risk as it was me (23), my husband (27), our two kids ( 2 year old and 4 month old) and my husbands brother (23) in the vehicle when it malfunctioned. We were lucky enough to safely get off the highway without harming ourselves or anyone else. We had the vehicle towed to a shop and they informed us that it threw a rod in the engine but insurance didnt come out. There werent any messages on prior to failure but once it happened a few lights came on. The check engine, oil, and a light that had a steering wheel and an exclamation point by it.

The contact owns a 2014 Kia Soul. The contact stated that he had received an unknown recall notification. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and four unstated recall repairs were performed. Upon return of the vehicle, the contact stated that the vehicle would stall and hesitate upon depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where the oil pump, oil sender, and air compressor were all replaced. Days after the repair, the check engine light appeared on the instrument panel. The independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle with engine failure. The mechanic then called the dealer and he was informed that the vehicle was under warranty. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it remained in their possession for a week; the dealer then informed the contact that the manufacturer would not cover the repair under warranty. The contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Vehicle looses power. Sounds muffled and noisy. Engine knocking. Does not shift as it should. Engine gets hot, dash board got hot yesterday. Where is the oil going? No check engine lights. Started approx a month after I had the kia dealer do the computer update. Seems to occur with hills, Excelleration, when it has to work. I had a tune up, fluids changed, mechanic gave up. Kia said I had to take it to a kia dealer.

- #11462240April 26, 2022SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
My air bag, ABS and Brake Lights all gave warnings at about the same time, as well as my speedometer going "haywire" on a cold start. I got a recall notice about my airbag (electrical problems) and took it in to Parkway Kia, and was told that the airbag was not part of the recall, and that it would cost $1000 to repair the lights, as several different sensors had gone out at the same time. Included was 5 or 6 repairs that had already been verified that I didn't need. If the dealership is using recall opportunities to push $1000s of unnecessary "maintenance" repairs on their vehicles, no one is going to trust those recalls and this is creating an unsafe driving environment for everyone. I contacted Kia corporate and they stated each shop is "independently owned and operated" and "repairs can be declined." Kia is making a farce of this process and using your agency to perpetuate fraud.

The contact owns a 2014 Kia Soul. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, there was an abnormal burning odor coming from the vehicle. The oil warning light was flashing on the instrument panel and then the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic, who diagnosed the failure with a catalytic converter and engine pressure. The catalytic converter was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 107,000.

The contact owned a 2015 Kia Soul. The contact stated while driving at approximately 65 MPH the vehicle began to slow and white smoke began to issue from under the hood. The contact stated she was not aware of any warning light being illuminated. The contact heard a loud ticking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact was able to safely pull off of the highway, however as soon as she had exited the vehicle the contact heard a loud explosion. The contact stated that the vehicle lifted up a few inches off of the roadway and was engulfed in flames from the hood to the trunk. The fire department was called as well as the police. The fire department used water to extinguish the fire. The contact had researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V051000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The vehicle was towed to an impound lot. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

Soon after buying my car used in 4/2021, I took the car into a KIA dealership to have the check engine light evaluated and asked for the open recalls to be addressed also. They didn't check the codes before doing the recalls and said the recalls performed cleared the codes and the check engine light was no longer on. I then had my mechanic do a tune up of spark plugs and oil, lube and filter change. The car performed better but would randomly experience loss of power while on the highway or when accelerating from a stop as though it was chocking and ready to stall. The check engine light never came on during this time. I have had to keep a very close eye on the oil level this whole year and there has not been any signs of a leak . But I have had to add a quart or more of oil approximately every 500 miles plus have the regular oil and filter changes. Also installed a new PCV valve. I have put 11,500 miles on the vehicle in one year. Now one year later, I couldn't get the car to accelerate to highway speeds and yet no check engine light comes on. I took the car to another KIA dealer to have it diagnosed. The codes were showing misfires on multiple cylinders. And their diagnosis is that the catalytic converter and gaskets and O2 sensor need replaced plus the spark plugs need replaced because they are burnt. Also the fuel system needs serviced due to excessive carbon build up. I have researched the recalls on the 2014 Kia Soul and see that there is a NHTSA campaign:19V120000 that addresses this same issue but somehow my VIN is not included. I am not able to have these repairs made (nearly $4000) and this car is just an accident waiting to happen. Why is my VIN not included in this known issue that already has a recall associated with my make and model?

The KIA Catalytic Converter recall update from 2019 did not work. My check engine light kept coming on after that and KIA did not replace the catalytic converter or car, as they were supposed to, even though my car WAS under the emissions warranty at that time. They said the update to the computer took care of it, but the engine light kept coming on. Now the catalytic converter failed, no surprise, and it has also damage my air conditioner. Kia is paying for NOTHING. The dealership was sold to a new owner and my car is no longer under warranty, but this is not an isolated sequence of events with the Kia Soul catalytic converter recall. Kia should've replace my catalytic converter, or the whole car/engine, at the time I brought it in...but now here I am with 4 grand in repairs (catalytic converter & exhaust manifold, gaskets, a/c blower, and resistor...common issues occuring from a bad catalytic converter)...NOT to mention more than $500 in car rentals, etc. I am furious that Kia did not listen to me about the engine light after the catalytic converter recall, when it turned on my engine light. Additionally, it has caused oil leakage, which can lead to fire. The recall number is SC176, my case number is 14760972
