- #11570832February 8, 2024AIR BAGS, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
My dashboard screen has turned off completely 3 different times in the 14 months I have had the vehicle. It is normally off for several days at a time. When it is off, I have no access to my speed, gas, or any other controls shown on that display. When I run the KIa diagnostic tool, it tells me there is an issue with my airbags. Kia has a recall for this issue but refuses to apply the recall (software update) to my vehicle because it was manufactured 19 days before the recall period. I have photos and videos that I have shared with Kia Corporate every time it happens. Below is the reply from Kia Corporate "Dear [XXX] , Thank you for your inquire. We apologize the service campaign in reference is not related to customers vehicle. If we release a Service Campaign also known as a Safety recall, the customer with the affected vehicle will receive a letter in the mail. This campaign is for Niro thats production date is between September 14, 2022 to March 8, 2023, customers vehicle production date is [XXX]. If you are still having concerns customer is welcome to take the vehicle to an alternate Kia Dealer for a second opinion. Sincerely, [XXX] Phone | [XXX] Kia America" INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I received important safety recall letter for NHTSA recall # 23V534. the HCA & or Fuse might need to be replaced . I brought the 2021 Nero to my local Kia dealership, Eagle kia ,Riverhead NY on January 18th. The dealership still has the vehicle & claims that a code came up when they did the diagnostics That requires a part that must be secured to complete the fix for the recall. they claim they are awaiting approval from kia corporate & NHTSA to add to the technical bulletin. But their is no timeframe they have or when this additional part will be available. The dealership has the fuses & Harness for the HCA replacement, but needs this additional part. I asked what the # of this part is or name, but all they would tell me TBT.

I received this recall notice that I thin is a scam as it is not listed on your site. U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) <[email protected]> reply-to: [email protected] Your vehicle MAY be involved in a safety recall and MAY create a safety risk for you or your passengers. Faulty EPCU and circuit board damaged from coolant leak, as described by Kia technician. Other components have been affected. Estimated $3,000 in parts left to replace. Total repair cost is looking to exceed $13,000. On last failure of car, I was driving as the Electical Vehicle Systems error occurred and the car went into neutral and when it slowed down, went into Park. Car would start and drive 10-15 feet before becoming inoperable again. Dealership says they fixed by adding coolant and they couldn't replicate the error. It took me 200 ft of driving to do it. I turned on the AC and the error happened. Could have been coincidental. Kia has declined/refused repairs because serious fault happened at 60,800 miles and they say its out of warranty. Issue had been going on for about 30,000 miles at that point with no resolution ever being reached. Car has been throwing errors and codes and repeated attempts to have Kia check my car for the recall that had been issued were ignored and i was told the recall wasnt the issue. April 29, 2023 was the first time I contacted Kia service about the Low Inverter Coolant message I was getting. Kia insisted that coolant just needed to be flushed. Coolant Issue persisted. They bled and flushed the system and put new coolant in. Issue peristed. Car was taken to dealership at least 3 or 4 times. On one occasion, technician informed me that if the coolant message goes away when you turn the car off and it doesn't constantly flash, there's no urgent issue. He was apparently misinformed. I have now had the exact thing happen to my car that the recall was meant to prevent. My car was produced in 8/20 so within recall time-frame. My car should be recalled and Kia should be made to rectify the situation. All repair documents and estimates are included in my submission.

- #11569149January 31, 2024ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM:CHARGING:CABLE/CORD:ACCESSORY
The vehicle is usually charged on a level 2 system set to 40 amps or 9 KW/hr. In October of 2023, I received the following message from the Kia connect application, "Charge Interrupted". The car disconnected electrically from the wall unit/charger because the connector unit in the car where the cable plugs into or internal charging unit was getting hot. This "charging interrupted" is a known issue with Kia and Hyundai electric cars so much so that they have issued a Technical Service Bulletin SB, ELE288 which reprograms the car charging logic for level 2 charging. The TSB dramatically slows down the charge rate (from 9 KW/hr to 5 KW/hr when the connector or charging unit gets hot through normal charging. The net effect of this TSB, work around has doubled the time required to charge at the level 2 rate indicated in the owners manual (Page 1-17). Kia needs to address this problems via a hardware fix rather than covering it with a software work-around which doubles level 2 charging times by reducing the charging rate. I bought this electric car under the impression from the manufacture that it could charge to its battery 0-80% in 6-7 hours. The new reality of the TSB fix for overheated charging components is a 12 plus hour recharge to 80%. The TSB fix for overheating components is reducing the value and the utility of my new car. Please investigate this issue as it also shows up in the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ionic 5 and 6, as all cars are probably using the same connector design or sharing parts.

- #11567929January 26, 2024ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ENGINE, FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Fire warning recall notice issued in July 2023. Follow up with both Kia and with Kia dealership that I purchased the vehicle from still says that there is no fix to this problem. THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) IN THE HYDRAULIC CLUTCH ACTUATOR (HCA) MAY BECOME CONTAMINATED WITH FLUID. A FLUID-CONTAMINATED PCB MAY LEAD TO AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE WHILE DRIVING. With the potential of a fire risk while driving, why is the manufacturer not required to remedy this situation in a more timely manner. It has been over 6 months since the recall was issued yet the manufacturer is allowed to continue producing vehicles but not required to repair those vehicles that may be affected and cause significant risks to the driver at potentially other property. NHTSA should mandate inspection and repairs of recalled vehicles which should take a priority to the manufacturing process. Vehicles with recalls should not be allowed to go without repair especially when accidents are imminent and life-threatening injuries may occur. Additionally, trying to get an appointment with a local Kia dealer where I purchased the car has a wait of well over a month for them to even inspect the car. Between Kia not taking care of their vehicles and their dealers not being able to service vehicles, NHTSA really needs to evaluate this and create remedies for the safety of the vehicle and the driver. Waiting over 6 months for a recall is frustrating, dangerous, and unacceptable. Manufacturers need to take responsibility for recall notices and repairs in a much more timely manner. Safety over profit should be a priority. On a personal note. I purchased my Kia Niro hybrid new in 2018. It is one of the best cars that I have purchased in my '76 years. I have had virtually no problems with the vehicle and was a big proponent of Kia, but their lackadaisical attitude on recall repairs as really put a damper on my respect for their management and

My 2017 Kia Niro (hybrid) discharges white smoke and overheats while being driven. I brought it to a reputable mechanic immediately. After an inspection, it was discovered that coolant is leaking into the engine because the heat exchange system is not functioning correctly. There are 6 similar complaints files about the same model vehicle (NHTSA 11561701, 11550994, 11547940, 11442817, 11457565 & 11491873) and many that have not been filed on line but complaints are the same. A Kia dealership said that the part (#28601G5320) is on back order everywhere w/ no availability in sight. This is a $3000-$6000 repair and is ridiculous. No engine lights or indications of anything malfunctioning, this needs to be recalled ASAP!

I picked up this car on 12/30/2023. On 1/10/2024, I noticed that the power folding side mirrors were folding slower than normal. On 1/13/2024, I went into the Kia Access app and was greeted by an error message stating that remote commands could not be sent as the battery was under 40%, however the app showed the battery at 80%. On 1/14/2024, I discovered the app was referencing the 12-volt battery, as the car's power mirrors and locks did not function. I needed the car to get to a relative's house to figure out a furnace issue, so the timing could not have been worse. I had a tow set up and the driver advised the 12-volt battery had 3 volts of charge. The driver jumped started the car and it went up to 14 volts once the car was on. Once the car was off, the battery dropped down to 9 volts. On 1/15/2024, the car dealership started to look into the car but could not be due to technical issues with their technical assistance system with Kia Corporate. The dealer-installed locator was removed and there still is a draw on the battery when the car is off. On 1/18/2024, the car dealership called me to ask if I had any third-party apps or Kia Connect. I advised I am not aware of any, however if that was the cause of the battery drain, there is most certainly a design flaw with the battery management system in the car and the car should turn off those features to protect the battery should it get low enough. On 1/23/2024, the car dealership advised that the 12-volt battery was replaced, however they are seeing a draw on the battery. The dealership asked me to unregister my car with Kia Connect. I did so, but re-iterated that if this fixes the issue, there is definitely a design flaw with the battery management system in the car and there should be a software fix made. A simple Google search or NHTSA search for any of Kia's/Hyundai's EVs with dead 12-volt batteries show many users with similar issues. I urge the NHTSA to look into this issue across Kia's/Hyundai's EV lineup.

- #11564643January 10, 2024FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
I was driving myself and two passengers on a highway at night in the rain. I was using the adaptive cruise control and was maintaining speed when i went through a puddle and I think the car hydroplaned a little. A warning sign flashed up on the dash that said something towards "deactivating cruise control" - i am not sure of the exact warning. I've had a warning similar, im not sure if its the exact same, when the adaptive cruise control turns off in traffic and it slows down and turns itself off. But when it turned off this time after the puddle I tried to take control of the car and the gas pedal was completely unresponsive. Pedal to the metal, nothing. I was, thankfully, the only car in sight, so i was able to change lanes and check my brakes, which worked, and coasted/braked my way off the shoulder. I turned the car off and then back on and the car and pedal responded normally.

This complaint references the open recall with the Kia reference SC276 and the NHTSA reference of 23V534. Kia has not been able to provide me with repair despite a notice from them stating a remedy is available, and appears Kia may be sending out faulty notices. I first received notice in July/August, 2023 that this recall was in process but remedy was not available. This week, I recieved a letter dated December 29, 2023 that explicitly states remedy is available (attachments will be added). However, the NHTSA website, the Kia recall website, and my local Kia dealer all as of today (01/04/24) say that remedy still is not available. I have attempted to call Kia customer care at the number on the letter, but every attempt has resulted in their system hanging up on me before I could reach anyone.
